Kidney Disease: What is the benefit of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis?

What is the benefit of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis?

Posted by Jackie B
Both types take the place (only partially though) of normal kidney function in the event of kidney failure. Hemodialysis is usually 3 times a week, from 3-4 hours per treatment, requires 2 needles each time and it's usually done in an outpatient center. Peritoneal dialysis is usually done every day, either during the night when sleeping or throughout the course of an entire day, can be done at home, can maintain the blood chemistries to nearly normal, and allows for a more liberal diet and fluid intake.

Kidney Disease: Does anyone know where I can find a table summary w/ the phosphorus level on all Friskies canned food flavors?

Does anyone know where I can find a table summary w/ the phosphorus level on all Friskies canned food flavors?Does anyone know where I can find a table/ summary with the phosphorus level on all Friskies canned food flavors? I checked Purina's website and they don't seem to have it. My cat (Sparky) was diagnosed with kidney disease last week. I've been trying to get him to eat the Royal Canin diet with no success. My 16 year old companion wants his regular canned food. Also, oddly enough, he now has interest in Friskies Dental Diet (dry food) - go figure... Is dry food okay for a cat with his condition?

Many thanks in advance to all cat lovers that will reply. It is so overwhelming to deal with all the newness of the situation and how helpless we feel. I really want to help Sparky.

Treatment of Chronic Renal Failure

If your cat is not in final stages, this is not want you want to do. You do not want to put your cat on the
Vets low protein diet. There are simply so many better options out there than to hand the poor cat a low amount of poor quality protein - which often results in a poor appetite and muscle wasting since the body is now robbing its own muscle mass to feed itself a decent quality and amount of protein.
. There are new thoughts on this and the thinking is it is not the amount of protein but the quality of protein that matters.
The Merck veterinary manual [www.merckvetmanual.com] says that cats need "4 g of protein of high biologic value per kg body wt/day". That's about 7 calories from protein per pound body weight per day. If a cat isn't a good eater and consumes, say, 20 calories per pound per day, then 7/20 = 35% of calories can safely be from protein. It must be high quality protein, which means meat, fish, milk, and eggs, and not grain or soy.

I am under the assumption that you have been feeding mostly dry foods. Many use a vegetable based protein instead of animal and that is part of the problem.. Your cat needs protein as it is a carnivore and cutting down on it will lead to other health issues and may cause faster degeneration.
You want to cut down on phosphorous (no fish allowed now)

The best way to do this is with a raw diet which you can make yourself or buy. (Making yourself is better) link provided at the bottom
If you are unwilling to do that then something like the non fish flavors of Wellness or Merrick with NO grains are good alternatives. Wysong is also a good canned choice. This list gives a breakdown. Remember you want low phosphorous
http://www.geocities.com/jmpeerson/CanFoodOld.html

You should be giving sub-Q fluids as needed.

You also will want to look into phosphorous binders. Something like aluminum hydroxide
Ask your vet or look into calcitrol

You may want to talk to the vet about having injectable Pepcid AC on hand or you can buy it in pill form (ac not plain pepcid) and give 1/4 tab for stomach upset which happens a lot in crf cats due to acid in the stomach.
I hope this stuff helps, here are many links for you

Here's a table I found of the phosphorous levels in dry cat foods:
http://webpages.charter.net/katkarma/dry.htm

It looks a tiny bit outdated (2005), but it may serve as a useful guideline. There's also links to canned food.

Getting plenty of water is important for cats with kidney disease. You might consider feeding a bit of canned food a day and mixing extra water into it.

Renal failure and a seizure are not the same. Renal failure can be chronic or acute, but it means your kidney function is going or gone. There's no way back except a transplant. You don't "get it again", you "have" it - forever.

There are many kinds of seizures - you'll have to be more specific.

Water retention and pitting edema HELP >.<?

Water retention and pitting edema HELP >.I originally weighed in at about 108 before the cruise I also have Celiac disease (allergy to gluten) and I went on a cruise July 23rd we asked for gluten free menus so they assured me everything was gluten free and the cruise was 9 days.On the second day I noticed swelling in my feet and ankles. It got worse as the vacation went on on the 6th day I went to the ships doctor I weighed in at 123. She didnt know what to do because im only 16 so she prescribed me lasics and predisone. When we arrived home on August 1st I went to the hospital they transfered me to another hospital and I stayed there for 6 days. They took as many tests and everything blood work stool tests EVERYTHING you can think of. Everything came back normal. No kidney/liver problems. My protein levels were low even though I take in enough protein. I wasn't loosing it through stool/urine. They couldnt find out anything in the hospital so I got sent home. Its been over a month and they still cant figure out why I am retaining so much water. I do have thyroid disease in my bloodwork but the doctor said that it isnt active yet. SO I DONT KNOW what the hell to do! Its August 31st and I am now weighing in at 132 lbs... WTF its 23 pounds I have gained in water weight alone. School starts Sep 3rd and I cant fit into clothes. My ankles, legs, stomach, and back are all swollen with water. My pitting edema is getting very bad. Does anyone have any idea what it could be. Sorry this is so long. AHH!

Birth control options for a 15 year old with degenerative kidney condition?

Birth control options for a 15 year old with degenerative kidney condition?First of all, I know that because of my age I'll get "ABSTINENCE" replies. Thank you for your concern, but I won't be practicing abstinence. I don't see the problem in underage sex, as long as methods are used to prevent pregnancy and diseases. Which is why I'm asking this question...

I had a pregnancy scare, which has claimed my trust in condom use alone without a backup. I'd really like to get on some form of birth control, but I'm not sure what I can use with my kidney problem. It's not kidney disease, but a problem where my one kidney doesn't function very well. I think some of the birth control pills could hurt that condition.

From the research I've done on all forms of birth control, pills seem to the the preferable method.

So does anybody know if there is pills that can be used in conjuction with my kidney condition?
I would still use condoms, of course, along with a birth control method.

I was looking into Nuvaring, and it seemed perfect. However, I found a site with 171 reviews, and 165 of the people there absolutely hated it and discontinued use.

I don't know where I'd "discuss my options" with a healthcare provider...

Oh, and my mom is fully aware of me being sexually active and looking for a birth control method, by the way.

Posted by Andy S
Maybe you can do some online research...I think (but I'm not certain) that sex hormones are primarily processed by the liver, rather than the kidneys. Good luck...

Posted by Oscar
why not just ask you doctor, like an obgyn or pediatrician. they have degrees for that stuff. also, ask a pharmacist, they actually should know all about the effects and whys and hows.

Posted by Janey
If you are going to go on the pill you need to have it prescribed by a doctor. They need to check your general health, blood pressure etc etc. The doctor will know what is compatible with your condition. Pharmacists can also help. You can talk to your regular general practitioner or go to a sexual health clinic or teen health service. If your mom is on board with all of this she could tell you who to see.

It is good you are being proactive about birth control and looking after your health. And I agree, condoms are fantastic and everyone should use them but there is a reasonable failure rate - well, enough to be worried at 15! So a backup is a good idea. Unfortunately there still aren't many options for women...someone needs to come up with some better ideas...and some more birth control options for men!

Posted by Laredo
Will you still be able to use birth control pills, patches, or implants, after you have a kidney transplant? You're underage and immature; it appears that your brain hasn't caught up with the size of your body. If you don't take your health into consideration NOW, God only knows what will happen if you end up pregnant.

Kidney Disease: Any pros out there who think my sister's shut down kidneys will reverse on Dialysis?

Any pros out there who think my sister's shut down kidneys will reverse on Dialysis? My sister got a 3rd degree burn on her left leg from falling asleep on a heating pad for 7 hrs by accident 6 weeks ago. Had to have surgery on it and very strong meds. Her leg is healing very nicely but the meds made her kidneys shut down. She also got 'acute anemia' as well. She was very sick so we took her to emergency at the hospital and found out her kidneys were in shut down. I was shocked! She. couldnt eat, nausea, throwing up, high blood pressure.. Had to have 3 blood transfusions and is on dialysis now. She is still in the hospital and they are trying to reverse the kidney failure. The biopsy showed that 9 units of the kidneys 10 units got diseased from this. Her Creatinine was 8 but is now at 6. She has no other health issues. It is 'Acute Kidney Failure" that has just happened about 2+ weeks ago. She is now doing great, eats, feels normal now except is being treated to help reverse the kidneys. The doctor said they may or maynot reverse and it could take up to 6 months for that to happen if it does. We are praying that it does. Anyone else had this happen before and have the kidneys reverse to working again? my sons father in law had kidney failure from his heart surgery and his Creatinine was at 12 and his kidneys reversed in 2 months. He was lucky they reversed. This has been horribly upsetting. I can't believe my 53 yr old healthy sister got this from some stupid medication.

Posted by Luis
Wow stupid doctors u can live without kidneys through dialisis but hopefully kidneys will reverse or u can donate a kidney to Sis or put her on that one list

The kidneys will heal in time. Don't hold you breadth through. There are so many factors in this ??? it just may not happen then again ?All you can do is prayer and lot's of water.

Posted by Gracinda
If her nephrologists are hopeful that her kidney function will turn around, then that is a good sign.
They generally have a good idea, based upon the cause of the kidney failure and her response to the dialysis, if her kidneys will "heal."
Yes, it is possible, and I've seen it happen with my patients. It does take a few months sometimes.

Cat Nutrition and Health: (Raw Feeders)?

Cat Nutrition and Health: (Raw Feeders)? If Kidney Disease, kidney Failure tend to run in some breeds of cats, (for one the Siamese breed). If you want to try to prevent it in the first place, WHY? can't you feed your cat a kidney diet to begin with? Why, wait till symptoms appear. (it is usally too late by then). I'm talking about Raw Feeders here, Not commercial food feeders.
Is it because the kidney diet would be too low of protein or etc... for a non kidney prob. cat?
Thanks, God bless. Been pondering this for a while now.

Posted by old cat lady
There is no "kidney diet". Cats need quality meat protein all their lives. Yes, you would be depriving your cat of heathy nutrition to reduce the protein in her food.

I rescued a 15 yr old cat and she ate nothing but a raw meat diet for the seven years she lived with me. Of course she had "kidney disease" and she did beautifully right up till the end.

You can probably find a copy of "Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs" by Don Hamilton, DVM and read his chapter on "General Care for Kidney Failure". My library system has some copies.

Posted by catluvr2011
The food is specifically designed for pets who already have the disease and it gives them the special medicine/nutrients it needs.Would you take medicine if you weren't sick? If you get your cat checked regularly at your vet if symptoms show up you'll be in the minority of cats treated in time.

What you are writing here is strange. Raw by nature is high protein and many vets now believe that it is not the amount of protein fed but the quality. People feeding dry food any ties are feeding vegetable based protein instead of animal
Some crf patients are transitioning to a raw diet and any are having good success.
If you are talking about feeding a low protein diet to prevent kidney disease, you are just asking for trouble. Cats are obligate carnivores and need animal based protein to thrive
For quality for a carnivore, you want to feed a grain free diet as many cats have trouble with grains and the carbs that come from them. They haven't done any studies on cats about this but if you look at this study with dogs which are omnivores, yoiu would think this would apply to a carnivore

The reason high protien kibble isn't good for cats with kidney problems is because the kibble pieces have no moisture to balance out the protien. Raw is different and it is mostly moisture.

Can someone walk me through an ultrasound procedure for kidney stones?

Can someone walk me through an ultrasound procedure for kidney stones?I'm not getting ultrasound lithotripsy done or anything - just a check up to make sure that I don't have any more kidney stones (I had one back in October...not fun at all). Can someone walk me through this whole procedure? Will I have to undress or anything? Thanks in advance.

Posted by June Bugg
Hi.

Well, first is preparation. There isn't a lot of special preparation before a kidney scan; you will be asked to fast for 8-12 hours before the scan, and you may need to drink lots of water. The tech will take you to the ultrasound exam room and explain the procedure to you. You will probably be asked to take off your shirt (women can leave their bra on during a kidney exam) and will be given a gown. You won't need to take anything off below the waist unless your bladder is also being scanned. You'll need to lay down on your back or your side and pull the gown up to expose your belly. The tech will put some ultrasound gel on the probe or on your skin, and will use the probe against your back and/or your belly to image your kidneys. If your bladder is being imaged, you will need to take off your pants, but your private area will be covered (they don't need to image that!). When the exam is over, you will be given a towel or wipe to remove the ultrasound gel, and will be left to get dressed.

Remember that ultrasound techs just acquire the images, and, thought they know what they are looking at, they can't make a diagnosis and probably won't tell you if you have stones or not (however, some clinics give techs more responsibility, and yours may be able to tell you if everything looks fine). Most ultrasound techs will be happy to show you all the different organs or explain how the equipment works during your exam if you're interested.

Ask the vet. They should have outlined a programme for you. If you have Natural Health care practitioners in your area for pets, they can give you a variety of herbs and supplements to help support and detox the kidneys. You need to go to a professional though. Don't just start winging herbs at the dog.

Sorry you and your pup are going through this.

Cranberry juice. If he will drink it.

Posted by mojos1966
If he's a young pup then he'll be just fine but he'll be sick for a while..
You see, excedrin is processed through the liver, a dogs liver works a little differently than ours...He can't process the drug...It will eat up liver cells..Think of it as a pac man effect...The cells just keeep getting eaten up til the liver can't do it's job anymore..
A young pup is growing so fast that it's liver may be able to overcome..My advice to you ?
Aside from seeing the vet ofcourse...The highest quality food that you can buy may give your dog the nutrients it needs to recover those liver cells as they're being destroyed...
Dry food, the first ingredient should be poultry or lamb...The fisrt ingredient is corn or soy ? Sorry, your dog is doomed..
Your dog is growing very fast right now and can overcome the damage to his liver if you give him the right nutrients...Don't feed a cheap food...Give him the nutrients that a growing body needs and I'm sure he'll come out of this just fine.. :-)

i have renal failure and i get them all the time. well i get urinary tract infections all the time. you need to tell your doctor to put you on the antibiotics that you take continually that are released slowly through your body, instead of the usual 7-day treatment. it does not mean that you are dirty or anything, it is just a side-effect with your kidney malfunction.
hope it all works out for you :)

Generally, it's not curable. A lot depends on the cause of the kidney problem. Infection, high BP, diabetes, etc. In some cases, meds can slow the progression of the disease.

Sorry.

Best of luck.

Are you surprised?

"He suffered from a congenital kidney disease caused by focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (an autoimmune destruction and alteration of the kidney), which halted his growth at an early age, leading to a small stature (4 ft 8 in; 1.42 m) and a childlike appearance. He underwent two kidney transplants, one in 1973 and one in 1984, and required daily dialysis."

This is not news.

Should I even bother?

Should I even bother?I'm a happy healthy woman who is 20 years old. My boyfriend/fiance is 21.

We have talked about having kids, and agreed to wait at least a couple years (this was 3 years ago btw) before TTC. Lately I've noticed that he stares at babies with this longing look in his eyes. I can tell he wants one, but when I talked to him about it, he lies and says he doesn't want kids anymore, because he is afraid he is going to die before they grow up (he has kidney disease, and only a single kidney from birth).

I want a kid now though, and we both are healthy (aside from the kidney issues). Should I get my IUD out and start TTC? Would you do this and then try to surprise him when it finally happens?

We are supposed to get married this summer, and we are committed to one another, marriage is just a formality with my family that should be followed.
I'm asking this because I see it in his eyes... its the puppy look of begging...

He has talked to his doctor, and they predict dialysis by age 30.

I am the same blood and tissues type as him, and have 2 very healthy kidneys. I want to have a baby before I give him my kidney, as when that happens I will be getting my tubes tied.

We've talked about removing the IUD already, and I have an appointment to get it out next month. What I was asking is, should I get on other BC or should I just leave things sit and see if it happens?

I won't be wearing a dress at my wedding... I said we were getting married, but there will be no wedding.
I guess I should have added in here as well... before finding out about his kidneys, we were TTC. I had the IUD put in until we could get his disease under control (he is on BP meds and diuretics now).

His disease is now under control, and I am having the IUD removed.

We wanted kids right from the start, its only been since he found out that his kidney's were bad that the kids were put on hold.

Posted by Just Me
Don't surprise him with a pregnancy, even if you think he looks at babies with a longing look. Talk to him seriously about it and discuss your wanting for a child, maybe he'll come around. Ask him to discuss his kidney issues with a doctor, maybe they can put his mind at ease as far as dieing before they grow up.

Get him on board, have your IUD removed right before your wedding, enjoy your big day and then start TTC.

Good luck!!!

Posted by Apple
Well I wouldn't just take out your IUD w/out talking to him first. What you may think is a "nice surprise" to him just might not be. Maybe you should just take out your IUD the night you get married, or a few days before! But you should talk to your fiance first before doing something like that.

Posted by stephy
I would wait until after the wedding for many reasons. You won't fit into the dress when you get married if you are pregnant. You will probably get pregnant after getting the IUD out a lot faster than you think. Your family will also probably be a lot happier if you wait.
If anything just get married a little bit sooner.

Posted by rookem123
You should NOT just surprise him with the news...this is a decision that the two of you should make together, not something that you should trick him into.

Just talk to him some more about it to try to understand his fears. I would assume it would be difficult living with kidney disease and I can see where he is coming from. Maybe the two of you could even visit a counselor together. Good luck!

Will a female dog coming into heat?

Will a female dog coming into heat?create uncommon behavior among both male and female dogs that have been fixed and have never been around a b*tch in season?

My daughter's Golden Retriever (rescue) has a rare kidney disease. She cannot be put under anesthesia therefore she cannot be spayed. (Her life will be short because of this disease).

The Golden is 7 months. She is licking the area but there is no obvious physical signs. In the meantime my other dogs are rubbing all over blankets, furniture etc. Spending a lot of time smelling everywhere and my spayed APBT is just acting plain crazy.

Since I do not breed I have no idea if this could be the reason my motley crew is a bit bonkers right now.

Posted by Bella <3
Aaawww, the poor Golden! I wish the best of luck to her!

Anyways, my one male dog is fixed, but my one female isn't. Whenever she comes into heat, he goes crazy similar to your dogs. It's normal! Just the scent and instincts take over even though they are neutered. Dogs will be Dogs ;)

Posted by Scott
Give the Golden my best of luck!

Anyways, since she is in heat all your dogs can smell the scent and go crazy, females of jealousy, males on wanting, but they are dogs and like guys dogs will be dogs.

Posted by UHave2BeKiddingMe
I have one intact female, the other two females are spayed and a neutered male.

I can honestly say I have not noticed any change in their behavior when she is in heat, nor in her numerous spayed/neutered friends she hangs out with at my ranch.

Yet, perhaps your crew is reacting to her coming into heat.
It will be interesting to see how they react as she comes completely into season.

Posted by mauveme49
Sounds like she is comming into heat. That is why the males are bonkers. Poor thing, just keep her safe and good luck with her.

Posted by Julie D.
Although I have had no personal experience with this, I do have a very close friend that has. They are still putting off a *different smell* that the other dogs are just not use to. I do believe this is the reason for their odd behavior. The nose knows something is different. They are confused and just don't know what to make of the whole thing. It's not a wanting to mate, it's just a different smell that their not use to. JMHO and the opinion of my friend (as she has stated to me)

CRF Diet for a cat?

CRF Diet for a cat? Thanks for everyone's support. My 16y/o cat was finally diagnosed with chronic renal failure yesterday (that's what I expected). Thankfully, we seemed to have caught it in the beginning stages. I've been doing a ton of online reading about it, and have a friend whose cat has been doing great after being diagnosed with CRF 2 years ago (and has worse kidneys) so I'm feeling ok so far.

She will be getting fluids daily for starters and we'll spread that out as much as possible later. Vet also prescribed 1/4 pepcid 2x daily, to continue giving her laxatives, and sent me home with science diet k/d dry and wet. She won't eat the wet, she hates the sd brand. She is eating the dry, though. Prior, she was eating all canned diet of Fancy Feast after she rejected Wellness.

In my reading, some things say low protein/phosphorus is the way to go, but others say that low protein is an outdated way of thinking for CRF cats, and that quality protein is ok. She's already skinny :\
So, can anyone supply clear articles that might help me understand the controversy about protein here? Any info on how to make this treatment cheaper/more convenient would help too. Any good info at all.

My biggest concern is finding something that she will actually eat that will help her, because she's a picky eater to the extreme.

Anyone who can share CRF experiences would help too :)

Thanks everyone
Oh yeah, PS, I can feed my 2 cats canned seperately, but I can't fathom a way to keep dry food seperate. If the other cat eats the k/d, is that alright? He is currently on an all canned diet of Wellness brand.

Posted by old cat lady
I don't know if I have responded to you before about this. I would refer you to "Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs", Don Hamilton, DVM. North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, CA. 1999.

The book is available in most libraries as it is quite widely read. Dr. Hamilton has a section, "Kidney Failure" starting on page 213, discussing fluid therapy, kidney "numbers" and diet.

There is nothing to recommend any Science Diet food. My cat, who lived to be 22+, had a diet of home-prepared raw meat throughout her kidney "problem". I do not believe any dry food is right for kidney problems as even in cat's with healthy kidneys it is a strain on them not to have moisture in their food.

I am sorry your cat doesn't like the Wellness which is very good quality. Maybe you need to persist with it. I also use Natural Balance canned foods (along with raw meat). I like the chicken and chicken liver and turkey and giblet. I do not give the "fishy" varieties of the NB. My cats like the Instincts lamb and the venison in that line. Evanger's didn't go over with my cats. I also use the Avoderm chicken canned.

Have you come across this site?

http://www.felinecrf.org/

It's often referred to as the CRF bible as it is an excellent resource covering every aspect of caring for a CRF cat.

Your cat can live many, many healthy years if you support its system properly.

I believe that the low protein/phosphorus is very outdated and in some research it has actually proved to quicken the kidney failure. Cats can only absorb nutrients from meat protien sources so feeding a low protien diet certainly inhibits the entire body from working properly.

I also belive Science Diet is just about the worst thing vets offer as a solution to people with sick pets. And dry food is also terrible for a crf cat. You really need to keep a crf cat on a wet food diet.

The following websites will help you in your search for education on how to care for your cat with CRF

You've gotten a ton of links.

Basically, protein is still the way to go for your CRF (is it failure or actually just insufficiency?) cat and your other cat.

Canned food is the way to go for both cats

Phosphorous levels can be important but you can easily find foods that aren't too high in phosphorous by limiting fish. And if it becomes a problem you can get a prescription for phosphorous binders from your vet.

Honestly, prescription diets are horrible, and many CRI/CRF cats do well for a long time on a good diet with the possible supplementation of fluids

Can a kidney be donated twice?

Can a kidney be donated twice? So.

Tim and his functioning kidney are walking down the street when BOOM gingivitis kills him.

Because Tim is an organ donor Ned gets his kidney.

Ned and Tim's functioning kidney are boating off the coast of Florida when BOOM lightning strikes him.

Ned is also an organ donor and Tim's kidney still works. Can Tim's kidney be donated again?
also: don't you think the kidney would be cursed at this point?

Posted by Melissa M
As long as it is in good health I don't see why not.

Well, like you said, "Tim's kidney still works."

So logically, yes!

What I am unsure about though is how the lightning bolt didn't fry Ned's innards.

Kidney Disease: Can my ex use my health issues to help him take custody?

Can my ex use my health issues to help him take custody? My ex did not do anything to have a relationship with our child for 4 years. About a yr. ago he started playing every nasty trick in the book, including putting false charges against me. He got married about a yr. ago & apparently the wife wants an insta child. He is over 30k in arrears in cs. He's now filed in civil court not for visititaiton but SOLE custody claiming I'm unfit but with NO specifics. I'm a GOOD MOM! I've go school admin & many friend s& family who will attest to me being a good mom & my husband is a wonderful step dad. Anyway, I have major surgery coming up & I do have a chronic kidney disease but these things DO NOT keep me from doing whatever our daughter needs. I just want to know if he can sucessfully use this info. (if he learns it) to take her away. She does NOT even know him or his wife & is very happy where she is....

Posted by Jane S
Get a good lawyer. Should he be able to use your medical stuff against you to take your kids? NO!!!!! So long as you are still able to provide them with a stable and supportive home life.

If what you say is true: that he has had no contact (by his choice), has not paid child support and you can prove his prior accusations are false, then I don't think you have to much to worry about.

Posted by dreamteam
It is very hard for a man to get SOLE cust. but i know it is differant in every state. There are alot of fathers rights groups out there that will help him, but they will also tell him if he has no shot. Do you think hes just talking out his ***, and trying to scare you. I believe you would have to be proven unfit, for him to get SOLE, and that doesn't sound like that will happen. The surgery should have nothing to do with this, unless it will disable you from caring for your daughter. But a kidney disease shouldn't affect you from taking care of her, once you have healed.
My ex also did this. he was calling dcfs and claimimg all sorts of crazy things, every time they came out to see the kids they were unfounded accusations. They finally started to listen to me, figuring out that he was just trying to cause trouble, and they told him that if it happened again they would press charges on him!
Find a good lawyer honey, and try not to worry to much. It's not good for you to be stressing out.
I know it's scary, but fight. I know i did, and i won!!!I was only blessed with one daughter and i wasn't going to let him take her away from me!! Good luck & God Bless

Posted by Maggie
I would think not. When I was going through my divorce our daughter was 13 years old. I had some mental health issues that I was under doctors care for but my ex-husband tried everything he could to get custody stating I was mentally unfit. He actually was the one that made me that way. Anyway, I had a pretty good attorney and it worked out OK for all three of us. It takes alot nowadays to prove you are an unfit parent for any reason. I wish you luck and good health.

Posted by sstubbs30
Sounds like he wants custody so he doesn't have to pay the support seeing how he is so far in the hole with the child support as it is. I do believe he can use your health issues. Get a good lawyer.

Willing to be a Living Kidney Donor O positive Blood Type?

Willing to be a Living Kidney Donor O positive Blood Type?I have never smoked and don't drink alcohol. I am willing to help someone who is in need of a transplant. The only thing I would ask in return is to be compensated for my lost wages from work. This is legal for lost wages only and anyone questioning the legalities can check with the National Kidney Foundation. I registered with my local hospital and they are slow to begin prescreening. They gave me a exam date in Febuary. Does anyone know where I can have this procedure and test performed soon for a deserving person.
My work load increases 2 fold in March and I need time to recover after the procedure.
Thank you and only serious answers.
Because of some of the answers I have received I felt the need to explain what the law is. Under the 1984 NOTA law from Congress. Anyone who is a living donor may receive pay for lost wages not to exceed there normal gross wages. National Kidney Info Line is 888-894-6361. So before making ignorant remarks about it being illegal its not. I am trying to help but not go into debt from lost wages.

Posted by jessica.lanelle
Awwww how nice. I don't need a kidney, but will probably need a piece of your liver after New Year's Eve.

Posted by emt_me911
What you are proposing is illegal, not to mention unethical. People (or people's families) do not donate organs for financial gain.

Even though you are saying you want to "help someone in need", asking for compensation for "lost wages and recovery time" is selling...plain and simple.

It's called DONATION for a reason. Selling organs is against the law. Period.

EMT

It still looks like you are doing this for financial gain. If you can't afford to take some time off work, then donate something that takes little of your time...like blood or bone marrow. By the way, who is supposed to compensate you?

Posted by cid.dann
FYI dumba** this type of stuff is illegal. You can't just bring your broke a** on the computer trying to sell yo organs to stay out the welfare line. I gonna need you to get a job. HAHAHAH!

Posted by ngood10720
You can contact the "gift of life" in your local area. Gift of Life has different names in different states you can check with your DMV or the Division of Transplantation (A Federal Office) for the exact name. There is also the Minority Organ Tissue Donation Program they have a list of people waiting for organs and may be able to match you. I work for the National Kidney Foundation in Michigan and NKF does not typically match donors most of our work is in prevention and helping people to prevent their kidneys from failing. Its a generous offer that you make to help save someones life.

Posted by amandarez73
The poster is actually correct.

In May 2005, UNOS (which is the organ sharing network) did have clarified that under the 1984 NOTA law, that payment of "the expenses of travel, housing and lost wages incurred by the donor of a human organ in connection with the donation of the organ" is permitted.

What is illegal is the selling of an organ.

I think it is admirable that you are willing to donate a kidney - so few people do for strangers. Instead of the National Kidney Foundation, I would contact UNOS (www.unos.org), they are the organization that keeps the transplant lists and they can direct you to resources within your community. You other option is to contact the organ procurement group in your region -- call a local hospital and ask them for the contact info (when a patient dies in the hospital, the group has to be notified so the hospital will have the info).

talk to them about becoming a living donor -- I think they will jump on it. There are so many people on the waiting list in desparate need.

Good luck to you.

Life expectancy of end stage renal failure with dialysis?

Life expectancy of end stage renal failure with dialysis?Hello,

My sister is 48 years old and is in end stage renal failure from diabetes. She has severe diabetes (blood sugars have ranged from 23 - 700+) and also has very high blood pressure (200/110 sometimes, 170/90 average) Hepatitis C and all of the diabetes complications. She takes 26 prescriptions a day already. She gets pneumonia frequently and has had congestive heart failure. She has also had some mini strokes and has global brain atrophy. She is in a nursing home and I had to rush her to the ER on Monday, she was very swollen and her blood oxygen was 73 and they did a central line catheter right in the ER to start dialysis that night. They did surgery for a fistula yesterday, but her veins are shot, so they did a graft. She has had dialysis every day since Monday and they are sending her back to the nursing home today.

I am her Power of Attorney since our mother is also in a home with congestive heart failure and diabetes. My other family have all died. Our dad was 39, his sister 42, their dad 47 and my mom's dad 52 all of heart attacks. My other sister died at 43 from a brain aneursym and my brother died at 49 from congestive heart failure, multiple organ failure, diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

I'm not sure why she even wants to do dialysis, but I'm going along with it. She has a lot of brain damage so I'm not sure what all she understands other than she knows she will die without it. I'm wondering if I should have Hospice talk to her since they are more of an expert on end of life. I have a hard time even talking (or typing about it) since we've already had to take my aunt, sister and brother off life support. She has a living will that says she wants no "life saving measures" taken, but dialysis seems in conflict with that. Should I get her paperwork rewritten? I just keep waiting for the phone to ring and it be the same call I've taken so many times before. I just don't know how long she will live with all the complications she has and I am a nervous wreck and having heart arrhythmmia issues myself now (I'm 45). I don't know what to do, about anything or if I should just not worry about it and wait for the call.

Posted by clock
Hi Jennifer,

Your sister has every right to live even with brain damage etc. Yes, you should "go along". Not only "go along" you should encourage her to live the best she can and for as long as she wants to.

Many people on dialysis live for years. Live long and productive lives.

Posted by okarol
I am sorry you have to deal with this. It's a very difficult subject, but since your sister appears to be able to choose, then you will probably need to support her decision. Dialysis is considered to be life support, since she would die without it. She will ultimately decide if her quality of life is worth the discomfort and possible complications on hemodialysis. You may want to learn more by posting on the support forum at www.ihatedialysis.com. My daughter was on hemo for 3 years before she got her kidney transplant and the forum has been really helpful. Best of luck to you and your family.

Kidney Disease: can any one give me a honest answer?

can any one give me a honest answer?Hi! I am a 21 yr old engg student in India. 6 months ago i had sex with a sex worker here in bangalore. I am scared to death about something that happened that night while having sex with her. The sex worker was around 30-40yrs of age. The two condoms that she had put on my penis had burst while having sex with her:( My penis was exposed to her vaginal liquid. Moreover i was drunk that night. Even though the condoms burst, she put another two condoms and i had sex with her. In the end i didn't cum in her as she gave me a hand job. After returing home i was so frieghtened that i washed my penis almost 3 times with dettol antiseptic. . .I spoke to most of my friends about this so that i could get an answer that could relieve me that i won't get HIV infection.
Some said as this was the first time it won't affect me. But i was so paranoid about this that i consulted with a doctor and he said it would take six mnths to know whether i have HIV infection. . . I am so worried now. Just 2 months ago i had abdomen aches which was misintrepeted by a doctor as kidney stone. But i was relieved when i came to know that i have gastric problem from a well known doctor:) It was due to my working part time for a call centre night shifts and the bad food habbits :( Just one week after the course of medication for gastric problem started i went out for a dinner at mc donalds which i was not supposed to do. Well! That night after i finished dinner there i returned home. There was lot of chicken left out which was made by my mother. I didn't want to waste . So before having it i had the before food tablet that i doctor had given me for the gastric problem. After that i finished the food and i was more than full stomach. That night when i went to bed i had a severe pain in the right side of my neck ,near the gland in the right part of neck. I thought it was a cramp. I ignored it and i continued going to call centre and working out in the gym with that pain. After a week the pain had gone but there was a swelling in the right part of my neck where i was feeling the pain. After a week or so i started getting burns in my feet. I ignored . It spread to my arms and i felt a weakening pain in my legs. I was worried and i thought it would be diabetic neuropathy. I was tense for a week or so till i consulted a doctor and he gave medication and told me not to worry. In the middle of medication i felt better but after i had a bottle of beer, back to square one. This time my pain worsened. I started feeling shortness of breath while at home or in gym. I started getting feeling burns on my back whenever i ate a bit spicy food. Now even stomach. Back pain, burning sensation under my foot. Pain in my testicles. So i went to doctor and he said its multi-vitamin deficiency and gave me medication for almost a month. He even checked my blood to see if it could be diabeties , but it wasn't. Now i am taking mediaction for almost a week but i feel the burning sensation is worsening and i feel i am having muscle wasting:'( I used to have pains whenever i used to work out on a particular body part like abs or biceps the next day after workout. But now i feel my workout i waste as i feel no pain no matter how hard i wrok. Nowadays i am getting pain in my testicles also:( I feel i have been infected by HIV Virus as the health problems i am facing are the symptoms of HIV. Can anyone say what disease i am suffering from is it the dreadful HIV Infection or is it just Vitamin deficiency??? Please i am tensed up . . .
Please help

You should never wear two condoms at once. They are more likely to break because they rub together.

first of all did you know India has a very HIGH hiv/aids rate? It's because so many nasty indian men visit prostitutes. What were you thinking? Can't you wait until you're married? That is sickening. What would your parents think? Im indian and im am disgusted by this. Yes you can get hiv/aids from unprotected sex. The MAJORITY of sex workers in india have hiv/aids. Many stupid indian men who are married visit sex workers ALOT and then they go home and have sex with thier own wife and give her aids too, this is why aids is so rampant in India. Why would you go to a sex worker anyways? Yuck. You put yourself in that situation, you knew the dangers, don't cry now about it. The chances of you getting hiv/aids from that sex worker are very high, and your friends are STUPID and probably go to sex workers too, gross ! Ofcourse they are dumb and are going to tell you you can't get it the first time, ummm yes you can get it the first time ! How stupid are you and your friends? Get some sense, make your family proud, stop visiting sex workers ! It's good you atleast went to the doctor, it will take 6 months to find out if you're hiv positive, so be patient. I hope you don't have it and i hope you have learned a lesson.

Kidney Disease: Kidney disease, please help ?

Kidney disease, please help ?A family member has been diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy , Mild interstitial Fibrosis and mild tubular Atrophy in his kidneys. I tried googling them ,but I did not get a clear answer. Can someone please tell me what these diseases are ? Can they be treated ? thank you.

Posted by N
IgA neophropathy is caused by a buildup of protein (called IgA) in the kidneys. It can cause bloody urine, swelling of the extremities and chronic kidney disease. Medications are prescribed to treat the swelling and high blood pressure that is caused by the disease. Steroids or medications to suppress the immune system may also be prescribed. The disease progresses slowly, some patients may eventually develop kidney failure.

I've been on dialysis and had a kidney and pancreas transplant myself.

You seem very angry that you received a transplant . Your doctors are really trying to help you by suggesting biopsies and bloodwork.. I follow my doctor's instructions and have done very, very well since transplant. I guess not everyone does as well as I do.

You seem a little overly angry about things that do not matter very much. My scar is not pretty but thank god I have it because otherwise I'd still be on dialysis or dead. I don't think I'd be so worried about not being able to eat grapefruit. There are plenty of people who can't eat grapefruit because it interferes with many medications. There are diabetics who have lists of things a mile long they can't eat or have to limit. And then there's that crappy dialysis diet.

I am surprised you are still on Valcyte and Bactrim as I went off those within about 6 months of my transplant. (Actually, I'm not sure how long ago you had your tranplant). I would request a review of your medications with your transplant dr. I'd request a review of all of them because maybe there are other anti-rejection meds that would work better for you. I switched from Cellcept to another one because of some of the side effects. I still take Prograf.

I highly advise you get bloodwork done; that is the ONLY way they know what is going on, and it''s definitely the only way they'll know if any of your symptoms are due to rejection.

I am honestly really sorry that you have not had the results that I have had. It must be very frustrating for you and I hope you can find some answers. If you want to look at a couple of other websites where you can interact w/ the transplant community for ideas, try these:

Dialysis - NEPHRO - KIDNEY - Renal

Dialysis at vss by:-Dr Chitta Kar,Asso.Prof.Nephro, Nephrology dept ,vssHealth sciences In medicine, dialysis (from Greek "dialusis", meaning dissolution, "dia", meaning through, and "lusis", meaning loosening) is primarily used to provide an artificial replacement for lost kidney function (renal replacement therapy) due to renal failure. Dialysis may be used for very sick patients who have suddenly but temporarily, lost their kidney function (acute renal failure) or for quite stable patients who have permanently lost their kidney function (stage 5 chronic kidney disease). When healthy, the kidneys maintain the body's internal equilibrium of water and minerals (sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sulfate) and the kidneys remove from the blood the daily metabolic load of fixed hydrogen ions. The kidneys also function as a part of the endocrine system producing erythropoietin and 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol). Dialysis is an imperfect treatment to replace kidney function because it does not correct the endocrine functions of the kidney. Dialysis treatments replace some of these functions through diffusion (waste removal) and ultrafiltration (fluid removal)

Which of the following statements about kidney function is not correct?

function of kidney
by McBeth

Which of the following statements about kidney function is not correct?help thanks!

Which of the following statements about kidney function is not correct?

A. The glomerulus is involved in size-selective filtration of the blood
B. The loop of Henle acts as a countercurrent exchanger, so no energy is required to maintain the osmotic gradient
C. the thin ascending limb of the loop of Henle is highly permeable to salt
D. the descending limb of the loop of Henle is highly permeable to water
E. reabsorption of water and solutes takes place primarily in the proximal tubule
actually explain please why the "one" is not correct. thanks alot!

Posted by Rynn-chan
The answer is B.
The loop of Henle is the countercurrent multiplier (a system that uses energy to create a concentration gradient) while the vasa recta is the countercurrent exchanger (a mechanism of exchanging some property of a flowing fluid to another across a semipermeable membrane. The fluid should flow in the opposite directions. In this case, blood flow in vasa recta is opposite to the direction of filtrate flow in the loop of Henle.

Hope it helps.

How do I tell if my kidney has failed?

How do I tell if my kidney has failed?I was born with only one functioning kidney, I made annual visits to a doctor to keep an eye on it until recently when the doctor said I did not have to come for another three years or so due to it being in good shape. But sadly, I worry about everything, a lot. And would greatly appreciate it if someone could give me the symptoms of a failed kidney, mainly symptoms that I would experience immediately/shortly after failure so that I can get myself to a hospital as soon as possible if needed.

Lack of urine, not using the bath room in a timely fashion. Pain in the lower back or kidney area.

There are usually no symptoms of early kidney failure. It has to be very advanced before symptoms begin appear. Those would be excessive swelling in the feet and legs; extreme itching; nausea; not thinking clearly, feeling tired, and a poor appetite..

I have been on dialysis. When I say "excessive swelling", I'm talking about where you can take your finger and push it into the swollen portion of your leg and leave a big indentation. I don't mean a tiny bit of swelling after you ate too much Chinese food and that's gone the next morning. By itching, I mean constant itching that doesn't go away. By feeling tired, I mean that you have true anemia, not the kind that can be helped with diet. I used to come home from work, sleep 3 hours, wake up for an hour, and then go to bed for the night. My appetite was so poor that the only things I wanted were things with a great deal of flavor, like spicy Mexican food.

These symptoms come on somewhat slowly. You would have plenty of time to have them checked on.

You can do fine with one kidney - I am following a transplant. The really important things you want to do are to avoid the main causes of chronic kidney failure: diabetes and high blood pressure. I'd go for a yearly checkup including labs to make sure your blood sugar is normal and that your blood pressure is normal.
