Kidney Disease: Do you have any idea what the prognosis of third-stage kidney failure can be?

Do you have any idea what the prognosis of third-stage kidney failure can be?I'm just looking for a general idea, not a diagnosis. I also know each case is diifferent.

Jeanne B,
Very briefly - NO! I also suspect that this question has no answer. I shall try to explain. Chronic kidney diseases are often confused with kidney failure. In fact kidney failure is the last stage of chronic kidney disease. So, I am not really sure where you find the diasgnosis of "Third Stage Kidney Failure." There are five different stages of chronic kidney disease. Stage 3 is the stage where the symptoms start showing. The Glomerular Filtration Rate - GFR falls somewhere in between 30 to 59 ml/min. The normal GFR is 90-120 cc/min. British guidelines distinguish between stage 3A (GFR 45-59) and stage 3B (GFR 30-44). The patient shows symptoms of fatigue and breath shortage. Liquids start accumulating in different parts of the body and this is clearly visible because of the swelling of the hands and legs. The urine colour of the person also shows identifiable changes. It changes to dark orange, red or brown. A person, if diagnosed at the third stage of chronic kidney disease, is referred to a nephrologist, who performs various lab tests to understand the root cause of the problem and suggests the type of treatment. A person in the third stage of chronic kidney disease should also consult a dietitian who would recommend the diet that would be most beneficial for them. If a patient is suffering from polycystic kidney disease, they may experience pain at the back of their body, the area where the kidneys are located. Though there are various causes that can result in chronic kidney diseases, diabetes and high blood pressure are the most common. Various other reasons also result in chronic kidney diseases and the type of treatment is directed towards removing the root cause. The prognosis of patients with chronic kidney disease is guarded as epidemiological data has shown that all cause mortality (the overall death rate) increases as kidney function decreases. The leading cause of death in patients with chronic kidney disease is cardiovascular disease, regardless of whether there is progression to stage 5.

ALL ANSWERS SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY RESEARCHED, IN ANY FORUM AND ESPECIALLY IN THIS ONE. - MANY ANSWERS ARE FLAWED.

It is extremely important to obtain an accurate diagnosis before trying to find a cure. Many diseases and conditions share common symptoms.

The information provided here should not be used during any medical emergency or for the diagnosis or treatment of any medical condition. A licensed physician should be consulted for diagnosis and treatment of any and all medical conditions.

Hope this helps

IF the disease can be stopped through medical treatment and a cooperative patient, then the patient can live at Stage 3 for the rest of their life. May be a little tiring, but still livable.

But in MOST cases Stage 3 will EVENTUALLY progress to complete kidney failure, requiring dialysis or possibly kidney transplant (IF the doctor approves)

Stage 3 chronic kidney disease means that there is a moderate loss of kidney function and your renal function is reduced. The normal renal function is expressed by the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The normal GFR is 90-120 cc/min. Stage 3 means the GFR is 30 to 59 cc/min. The GFR is determined with a blood test called the serum creatinine. This creatinine is plugged into a formula that reflects your age, gender and race. This formula is an estimate of your GFR.

There are five stages. When you are at stage 5 you often end up on dialysis. Please discuss with your doctor. Ask some questions:

1) what is causing the loss of kidney function?
2) what can I do to stabilize this so I won't end up on dialysis?
3) what meds should I be on and what should I avoid?
4) can I see a kidney specialist?

Hope this helps.
