I have one more question for Raw Feeders (Raw Feeders only please)?I have been asking a ton of questions about raw feeding and doing tons of research and when I tell someone I am raw feeding my dog a lot of questions are posed that I do not know the answer so I research and ask questions. I want to know because I am feeding raw meat to my dogs is the bacteria in the meat such as E-coli going to effect my dog in a dangerous manner? I know dogs have a much better immune system then we do but can they handle raw meat bacteria? My dogs both have been tested for kidney disease, Pancreatic cancer, have had blood tests and have a clean bill of health before I started the diet. They have seemed to be thriving so far. If the bacteria will effect them how long till I notice signs and if it does effect them what are the signs I need to look out for? I am just a worried owner and this is about everything not just there food thank you for your help.
P.S.- I always always wash my hands, counter, and utensils before handling raw meats and after. Also Thank you in advance for your help in my transition to Raw Diet.
They have no scientific proof in 2007 do your research again they have done research to prove there is a better outcome to raw feeding and its a controversial subject that sways 50/50 just like every thing in this world. That is why I asked for raw feeders only I know others opinions on the fact I have read tons and so far my dogs are doing fabulous my 9 year old that was sluggish and sleeping all day and was told that she is going to start to slow down by her vet has had a 180 she is playing with my 10 month old pup like she is a pup again to the vet is astonished by her switch behavior. She was also told she would be needing a teeth cleaning in a year and the vet again told me that her teeth are doing 100 percent better that she may not need that cleaning after all and that is proof enough for me.
Oh and FYI everything is a FAD even commercail grade food yes your purina is a FAD and there is nothing that proves commercial grade food is healthier for pets but they have been recalled so many times. Trust me I do my research not just on the interenet but with butchers, vets, other dog owners, books everything I can think of because anything can be put on the web.

Here are some actual FACTS about Raw feeding that you can recite back to your friends.
--------------------------------------
There is only "anecdotal" evidence that raw meat is better; in other words, claims made by individuals, which aren't backed up by hard clinical trials.
On the contrary, feeding your pet a raw-meat diet that you balance yourself is dangerous for many reasons. Among them:
High quality pet food is already balanced for the stage of life and health condition of your pet. Trying to "wing it" by formulating the right balance is very difficult and can easily lead to nutritional deficiency, especially in young, growing pets.
Raw bones in meat can splinter and become lodged in the throat or digestive system, where they can block passage or cut tissue. They can also fracture teeth.
Bacteria in raw meat IS dangerous to pets, as well as owners. Dogs and cats may have persistent diarrhea that their owners just accept as normal. However, this is a sign of illness and can cause other problems down the road, besides the discomfort suffered by the animal.
In the case of cats, proponents of raw meat claim that a cat's digestive system is more acidic and can process food faster, so bacteria does not have time to duplicate and cause illness.
That's nonsense, according to animal nutrition expert Rebecca Remillard, DVM, DACVN, Ph.D. "Everyone's stomach is acidic," she says. "That's how we digest food." Remillard, of Angell Memorial Animal Hospital, said the dietary theories proposed by raw-meat advocates are too vague and are causing a lot of problems in pets. "They're basically, 'open the fridge and feed what you want, whenever you want.'"
An article in the March 2001 issue of JAVMA (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association) compared raw meat diets with high-quality commercial diets. The raw meat diets used in the comparison were well researched and carefully balanced – a big assumption because many people do not have the nutritional experience to formulate such diets.
Even so, the comparison showed that raw meat had significant risks: "The results of the small number of diets analyzed here indicated that there are clearly nutritional and health risks associated with feeding raw food diets. All the diets tested had nutrient deficiencies or excesses that could cause serious health problems when used in a long-term feeding program."
Remillard hopes the raw meat issue is just a passing fad. "There's a general distrust of big business, and the pet food industry is big business," she said. "Add to that, food labels are not understandable and scary. But the risks of raw meat are there. Is the risk worthwhile? No, it isn't."

A healthy dog's digestive tract is designed to deal with the bacteria that is normally found in raw meat.
C'mon.. you're talking about a creature that drinks from the toilet, eats poop, and wont object to rotting roadkill.. domestically raised meats that have been properly handled are the least of your concerns!
E-Coli is actually carried in fecal matter, not the meat itself. When people get E-Coli from food, its actually because of poor food handling/cleaning.

The canine digestive system developed to handle raw meat. and in the wild the meat is not even always fresh - but some canines prefer it aged.
Their stomachs have much more HCL acid than the human digestive tract and so that kills off much of the bacteria that might effect humans.
Just remember that no matter what/how you choice to feed your dog their will be plenty of people ready to tell you you are doing it wrong - you just need to be comfortable in yourself that what you are doing is right for you and your dog.
I would suggest that you might want ot join one of the yahoo e-list on raw feeding - that would be an excellent source of information for you.

A dogs digestive tract is made with very stong acids, stronger than us humans. They are descendants from the wolf, and what do wolves eat? Right they eat their prey raw.
I was reluctant at first to give my dogs raw chicken, because if not cooked all the way for a HUMAN we can get sick. A dogs digestive tract is made for raw foods, not chemically made human food. I gave my dogs chicken and they were fine.

I am pleased that you are seeing positive improvements in you r dogs following a switch to RAW food. I have been feeding a RAW diet for about 5 years now and the dogs are certainly better for it. The dogs digestive system is well able to cope with the viruses that you mention, in the UK only food designated as - 'fit for human consumption, but not intended for such', is used in dog food, therefore the risk of contamination is exceedingly small. You are quite right to take the Hygiene precautions, but I feel you have no worries about your dog. The dogs metabolism works very quick and you would see a deterioration very quickly. Please keep the faith and do not allow the doubters to deter you. Diet questions always provoke a lot of criticism cos everyone feels that they feed their dogs the best.
