Have any diabetics out there WITHOUT high blood pressure been put on Cozaar to prevent kidney problems?

Have any diabetics out there WITHOUT high blood pressure been put on Cozaar to prevent kidney problems?I have once again been told by a doctor that as a diabetic I should be taking a hypertension medication for my kidneys. In the past, the medication made my blood pressure so low I swooned! I tried lower doses but still couldn't function so I stopped using it. Now about 10 years later, I am spilling a tiny bit of proteins in my urine, so I was sent to a kidney doctor. He wants me to start taking Cozaar to help with my kidneys. I still have a normal blood pressure so I am scared to try this again. I now have neuropathy in my feet and have balance issues. If my BP get low and makes me dizzy, I am afraid of falling and really hurting myself. Anyone who can give me some feedback would really be helping out. Thanks!

Ask for a different ARB or ACE medication until you find one you like. I had to try a few different types before finding one I liked. I take Atacand which for me has no side effects. Atacand also protects your kidneys like Cozaar does. I haven't experienced dizziness on Atacand like I have on some other blood pressure meds, but just to be safe, you should always get up slowly if you've been sitting for a long time or after sleeping.

Yep. Many diabetics take what are called ACE Inhibitors. These are commonly known blood pressure medications. I take Vasotec. I do NOT have high blood pressure.

My blood pressure is not really affected by this. There has been little change. I usually run about 100/70. I was showing protein in the urine some years ago and I was put on the Vasotec. My kidney function has improved and my blood pressure is perfect.

I know one endocrinologist (not mine) who puts ALL his diabetic patients on ACE inhibitors. Personally, I think it's a fine idea.

The fact that you are spilling a bit of protien in your urine means you have early nephropathy (early kidney disease that leads to kidney failure that leads to dialysis). ACE inhibitors at low dose have been shown to preserve kidney function and stave off further damage.

Anything (like surgery, heart attack, etc) plus kidney failure increases your risk for death by several fold. Your points are well made about fall risk but there can probably be an agent that covers both concerns if you stick with it. And it is important.

Good luck.
