END STAGE KIDNEY DISEASE---CATS?

END STAGE KIDNEY DISEASE---CATS?A WEEK AGO, I NEEDED TO PUT MY 14 YEAR OLD CAT YODA, TO SLEEP.

THE VET SAID THAT HE HAD " END STAGE KIDNEY DISEASE" AND HIS BODY TEMP WAS 90 DEGREES -- SO HE WAS TRYING TO DIE. I GAVE HER PERMISSION TO PUT HIM DOWN AND THEN PROCEEDED TO CRY MY EYES OUT.....

NOW I KNOW THAT 14 YEARS IS A REASONABLE AGE FOR A CAT TO DIE OF OLD AGE.

BUT SO THAT NONE OF MY CATS SUFFER FROM THIS DISEASE, I HAND WASH THE WATER BOWL EACH DAY.

IS THIS A COMMON DISEASE FOR CATS???

I think it's pretty common. Feed cats quality foods and not that byproduct crap. Also there are IV treatments for kidney failure and even transfusion to purify toxins from blood. My cat died of kidney failure but I think a better vet would have given better treatment, I learned a lot studying online that the vet never suggested or didn't even know about.

Kidney failure is not transmittable to other cats. The best thing you can do is give them lots of exercise, and provide a diet of mostly moist foods.

I'm so sorry about Yoda. It was kind that you let him go so he is not suffering any more.

Unfortunately, yes, kidney disease is quite common in older cats. It's become the most common cause of death in geriatric cats.. It's not contagious. It's something that happens in each cat's own body. One of the things that contributes to it is not getting enough moisture. Cats were not meant to eat a dry diet. They don't have a strong thirst drive, they developed to get their moisture from their prey. So one way that may help to avoid it in your other cats is to feed them at least half "wet" food (canned or a balanced raw diet). Keeping the water dish clean is a good idea, as is offering a few water dishes to encourage them to drink more.
Another thing that is important is do not wait until a cat gets really sick and loses a lot of weight to get them to a vet. If kidney disease is caught early and treated (most of which can be done at home with sub=cutaneous fluids, adding a phosphorus binder to the food since phosphorus can be hard on kidneys and meds to control symptoms), some cats live for quite a few years after diagnosis.
