ok... I have been on dialysis for some time now, both hemodialysis and peritoneal. Hemo depends on having surgery to install a port which will connect your vein and artery to the machine that renoves and cleans your blood and then returns it to your body. PD (Peritoneal Dialysis) also involves surgery to create access to the peritonal cavity. Some people connect themselves to a bag of dialysis fluid and it fills the peritoneal cavity. PD does nothing with the blood in your body. It uses the fluid to clean your body and remove it when you drain the fluid. It does this process by osmosis. It takes approximately
30 minutes to perform. Hemo takes about 4 hours 3 times a week. PD must be performed 4 times a day OR you can use a cycler for 9 hours a night. It will be set to drain and fill you 3 times a night and then do a final fill. For further info please check at www.davita.com. I hope this helps
