Does a person ever regain kidney function?

Does a person ever regain kidney function? My father-in-law only has one kidney after having the other removed due to cancer. This happened two years ago. He is also diabetic and on meds for high blood pressure. His "good" kidney is only functioning at 21% now. The dr. took him off of meds for diabeties & blood pressure. Is it possible for the kidney to regain any of its function or is dialysis the only answer?

The answer is yes, but it depends on how much damage has been done to the kidney and whether the underlying cause of kidney failure is cured.

Basically, the human body is very good at healing itself. As a example, when you cut your skin, given time and proper treatment, it will heal. Likewise, the kidney can regain its function if the conditions are right.

First, the underlying cause of kidney failure has to be properly treated. For instance, in the case of your father-in-law, once the cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes are successfully dealt with, he can regain some kidney function. He needs to be careful of his diet, exercise regularly, and detox.

In the mean time, however, he needs to continue with dialysis and follow his doctor's advice.
