What's the significance of blood testing for people with Chronic Renal Disease (aka ESRD)?

What's the significance of blood testing for people with Chronic Renal Disease (aka ESRD)?I actually know the answer to this one, but I'm not good at putting it all together. I need it for my student nursing care plan in the diagnostics section. I wasn't making sense at all when I tried explaining it myself. If anyone can give a good explanation, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance guys! :)
Rachel: It'd be great if you could explain all but if not, then the BUN and the Creatinine would do. Thanks! :)

What blood test are you looking at???

BUN, Creatnine, or a CBC and a metabolic panel as a whole?

ESRD is where 90% of the nephrons fail. THe BUN is greater than 50 and creatnine greater then 5. They have oliguria so they aren't going to be losing alot of potassium, sodium, chloride, etc. They usually have severe electrolyte imbalances. They can have hyperkalemia causing dysrythmias, so that needs to be watched since this can eventually be fatal. Hgb, Hct, and platelets will be low because of a decrease in production (also WBC). Thier ABG's may be monitored because they aren't ridding themselces of hydrogen causing metabolic acidosis. If they have too much BUN, which they probably will, they can have the uremic frost on thier skin. They can also develop uremic encehalopathy resulting in seizures and comas. Calcium is lost in bone due to hypocalcemia, so they are at risk for pathological fractures.

They monitor all this because the goal is to maintain what's left of the renal system. The BUN and Creatnine tells how much damage is done to the kidneys and is monitored to see if it's getting worse. They electrolyes are monitored and regulated. This prevents complications and helps to maintain life.

Hope this helped, sorry it took me a while.... I took a nap : )

You need to keep an eye on the patient's creatinine, BUN, and electrolyte levels.
