your kidney is responsible for making a hormone called Erythropoietin (EPO). whenever ur kidneys detect a low "red blood cell" count, it will be triggered to release EPO. This hormone acts at the level of the bone marrow to trigger new red blood cell production.

So, whenver someone suffers from Chronic Kidney Disease or End stage kidney disease, their kidneys function is severely impaired. The can no longer filter and maintain apporpriate electrolyte levels (this is why they require dialysis) and they can't effectively produce EPO (why they become anemic).

hope this helps
