What is the prognosis on Chronic Kidney Failure? My mother has lost a kidney about 10 years ago and her left one is failing now. She is going to start dialysis soon. I think what she has is Chronic Kidney Disease. My question is what is the prognosis of her situation? Now I already read that the prognosis for a person without dialysis is a few months, and with it 5 to 10 years, but I don't know if that is with one or both kidneys. If anyone has any information on this I could really use it. Thank You..

My friend lost both of her kidneys at the age of 17. She is now 26 and going strong. I wouldn't worry too much.

The prognosis depends on how she cares for herself. Exercise, diet, medication and keeping dialysis appointments are all things she can control to extend her life. Those who don't follow the rules die sooner. Remember that the five to ten years is an average and includes those who die from not taking care of themselves as well as those who die of things totally unrelated to their kidney disease. To live between 20 to 30 years on dialysis isn't uncommon. This is only a terminal condition if one decides to make it so.
A big problem is diet and the internet is a great help in that regard. Here's an example:
