The cause of Sugar in urine may be more easily identified if other symptoms exist. However, these are nine of the possible causes - Diabetes - Gestational diabetes - Cushing's syndrome - Genetic - Fanconi's syndrome - Chronic renal failure - Pregnancy (unlikely in this case) - Lead toxicity.

I don't know if there is any other reason but it is definitely a sign of diabetes. Did the doctor not do a blood test at the same time? Urine tests on their own are usually not enough for a full diagnosis. A blood test and other tests will confirm whether he has diabetes for sure or not.
