my dad is scheduled on friday for the consultation, till then i want to ask what this PET scan result means?low grade f.d.g activity is seen in the right maxillary sinus, consistent with inflamatory mucosal disease. Physiologic F.D.G. activity is seen in the brain parenchyma, mediastinum, liver, spleen, pancreas, adrenal glands, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, urinary bladder and prostate, no abnormal F.D.G activity in the lungs save for low grade inflammatory parenchymal lesion in the right lobe with fibrosis and bronchiectatic changes. Negatice for F.D.G avid lymph nodes in the chest, abdomen, pelvis and inguinal region. No abnormal FDG activity noted in the rest of the bodes. Interpretation hypermetabolic nasopharyngeal tumor with extension to the parasellar region and region of the right sphenoid. hypermatabolic lymphadenopathy in the right paratracheal region near the thoracic inlet, suspicious for metastasis. Inflamatory nodal activity is a differential. low grade bilateral submandibular lymph nodes maybe non specific in this case but low grade metabolic activity favors an inflamatory etiology. No hypermetabolic disease below the neck/thoracic inlet

This might be some kind of oral/throat cancer that has already spread to some lymph nodes. Your father needs to be asking his doctor what this means.

I really hate it when people ask these questions, as they should be answered by the ordering physician.
However, I also believe that you would not be asking unless you really wanted to know. So here it goes.
I means your father has cancer it is a nasopharyngeal cancer (probably a squamous cell) with lymph node involvement and appears to be a stage 4.
Surgery is not usually done with these tumors as clear margins cannot be obtained. With a T4 tumor local control at 5 years from diagnosis is about 50%.
Best wishes to you both.
