My dad has water retention in his legs and feet. He does have diabetes.?And his kidneys only function at 20%, but they have been that way for about 10 years. The swelling appears worse lately. Basically, the question I am asking is, does worse water retention signal that his kidneys may be failing more? Or is this just a normal sign of diabetes and chronic kidney disease. I don't want to over-worry myself....thank you.

Could be his diabetes is worse. Could be his liver is worse.
Is he following Dr's orders and taking his prescribed medicine? Is he moving around and exercising like he should be? How about his diet? These are all factors you have to consider.

It could be a sign that his kidneys are becoming worse. However, I would imagine that the doctors your dad sees would be checking his kidneys all the time because of his condition and would hopefully know if they were getting worse or not. Try not to worry. Just be supportive of your dad and all that he's going through. Don't show him that you're scared, just show him that you love him. He's probably worried enough for both of you!

When was the last time your father's heart function was tested? Water retention in the legs/ feet is a sign of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), which may occur secondary to his chronic renal failure.

he will hate the answer but he should lotion up feet and legs everyday 2 to 3 times a day and help the water recurculate they have those stocking that keep legs from swelling....... if you get them in first time in the morning
he could lay flat on the bed and put legs up above his heart for 20 minutes few times a day and go back to the kidney doctor
