Kidney failure diagnosis?

Kidney failure diagnosis?I am writing a short story and need to know about the diagnosis of kidney failure. How long does it take to find out that you have a failed kidney and what tests do you have to go through?

Can it be sudden that you need a kidney transplant? And if so, why?

No, there would be several other things happening before the kidney would shut down completely. Since this is for a short story, please go to webmd.com for more research. Then choose for yourself what you want to include for the length of story you need. Good luck and God Bless

There are several conditions that can cause rapid deterioration of kidney function. Whatever the underlying cause, the condition is known as Acute Renal Failure.
This makes you very tired / lethargic / sleepy. Other symptoms include malaise ('feeling sick"); oligura / anuria (little or no urine made); dyspnoea (shortness of breath); oedema (puffiness in legs).
You would end up in hospital and initially the blood and urine would be tested. You would then get scans of the kidney and possibly a biopsy of the kidney.

No one would get an urgent kidney transplant. Immediate and short-term Renal Replacement Therapy (ie doing the job of the kidney) is dialysis and variations thereof.

Good luck with your story!

no it is not too sudden, it is progressive, and the transplant can take months and years mean while the patient lives on dialysis, here's a plot for you, give your charactera methyl malonic acedemia which appears at birth and ends up with a renal failure at 5 years of age
