Kidney Disease: What kind of doctor should I go to to be tested for PKD?

What kind of doctor should I go to to be tested for PKD?my mom was recently diagnosed with PKD and 85% loss of kidney function. I would like to be tested first to know if I will be a possible candidate for donation and second to know if I have it and need to start monitoring my blood pressure and other things more closely. My insurance is a PPO, so I don't think I need a referral to go to a nephrologist, but is this something my GP could test me for or will I need the specialist? When it comes time for my mom to have a transplant her insurance will cover all this, but it has been bothering me and I would just like to know one way or the other.

A PKD doctor who else?

Your family physician should be able to point you in the right direction but I think you'll need just a nephrologist.

Your family physician can order the tests.

If there any problems, he or she can then refer you to a nephrologist.

If there aren't any problems, then you can wait and connect with your mom's transplant team.
