What is the process for a kidney ultrasound ?I'm 17 and going for an ultrasound on my kidneys on tuesday to look for cysts (PKD). I've been told not to eat for four hours but its ok to drink. I was wondering what would happen, would I need to undress or anything?
Thanks x
Thanks

It's really quite simple. It's non-invasive, (no shots, etc.) and completely painless. You are instructed to fast a specific number of hours prior to the exam but usually told to drink all the water you want.
In the exam room you will be given a hospital gown and told to undress above the waist, (women are usually able to keep their bras on and unless the exam includes the bladder, you usually don't need to undress below the waist.
You will be asked to lie down on your back and/or side to expose your belly, then the technologist will apply some gel on your skin and/or the ultrasound probe and move the probe over your back/belly to image your kidneys.
(The probe is simply a hand held device that sends and receives sound waves that will result in the images of your kidneys.)
That's all there is to it. When the tech is finished you'll be given a wipe to remove the gel and left alone to get dressed.
