How long do you have to give sub Q fluids to a cat witha ACUTE kidney disease?my cat was diagnosed with acute kidney disease. the vet said this was better than having chronic kidney disease, but when I read online, I get conflicting info. his BUN and Creatinine were really high. BUN was 10, crea was 174. he was in the hospital for 5 days. On the day he left, his BUN was 8.3 and Creatinine was 129. He now has to get sub Q fluids. It is impossible for me to do. I live alone and have no help. The vet said he will need it daily probably for 2 or 3 weeks. What happens after that?? I have been taking him there everyday to have them do it because I cant do it. He's only 5. What if he needs fluids the rest of his life?? is that possible?? this is really breaking me up inside. thanks

There is a good chance that if you can stick it out he will be able to not need the fluids any more. Only blood work will tell you for sure.
We had a client that brought his dog to our hospital for the same thing a few years ago. The vet gave him a very poor prognosis but this gentleman never gave up. He brought his buddy in faithfully, fed him a special kidney diet and now - years later - that dog has NO ill effects. We still test his kidney function now and then to be on the safe side but that is all.
So my advice is to give it some more time. A few weeks is not very long.
Best of luck. My prayers are with you and your friend for a speedy recovery. xoxo

The Subq fluids depends on how the animal react to the Sub Q therapy. Some animals with the special diet and fluids do well and bounce back for awhile. And some others didn't. If the disease was caught early chances are good the you may need to do sub q fluids as needed. but as the other person said it depends on the bloodwork numbers. As for giving sub q fluids by yourself there is a few ways you can do it. 1. you can wrap that cat in a towel real good and tight like a burrito and flip the towel where you would like to stick the fluids. 2. give him/her a special wet food to distract her/him while your doing it.
I was always giving fluids by myself at the clinic so you learn little tricks. 3. if you cat is a biter while your doing the fluids an e-collar to shield you from the little guys teeth can help to.
hope that helps
