Kidney produces a hormone called Erythropoeitin that stimulates the bone marrow to produce Red Blood Cells . In kidney disease the production of hormone is lowered hence less stimulation of bone marrow.

Hi Altoids,
There are a number of ways that chronic kidney disease (CKD) and anemia are related.
The principle one is that anemia develops from decreased ability of the kidneys to produce erythropoietin, the hormone responsible for bone marrow stimulation of red blood cell (RBC) production. It starts early in the course of disease and becomes more severe as the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) progressively decreases. Red blood cells (RBC) do not survive as long.
Other causes of anemia in CKD include chronic blood loss, secondary hyperparathyroidism, inflammation, nutritional deficiency, and accumulation of inhibitors of erythropoiesis, the process by which RBCs are produced.
One of the nutrient deficiencies is often Vitamin D. The kidney normally converts Vitamin D to its most active form, and Vitamin D, in turn, is responsible for helping keep parathyroid hormone in check. Hyperparathyroidism contributes to anemia by replacing the bone marrow cell structure with fibrous tissue that cannot produce RBCs.
Vitamin B12 and folic acid might also be linked to anemia associated with CKD.
I will provide some links for further reading.
Hope this helps some!
