How long can a cat or dog live with chronic kidney disease/failure when they are on the special diet?We have had a cat and dog become so ill from this that the vets recommended euthanization (after they had been on the diet for some time, but completely regressed). Our dog lived one year from the time of diagnosis and our cat only 2 months. Our cat had hyperthyroidism (controlled w/medicine for about 4 years) and anemia.
I don't want to get into details about my family's specific pets, but do you know in general how long they can live when on the hill's kd or purina nf diet? Thanks for any information.

It depends completely on the animal and the situation.
Some animals are tough as nails and fight sickness. Some don't fight as hard. If the animal has many different issues, they won't last as long. If the pet spent most of it's life as a stray, starving and stressed, they wont' do as well.
Owners sometimes have the best of intentions, but don't follow through with care. Sure, they'll feed the special food, then feed "treats" that completely undo the good the food is doing. After a while, some owners get tired of caring for a chronically ill pet and don't take as much care with meals and meds.
