How can you you use Ins and Outs to assess renal function?

How can you you use Ins and Outs to assess renal function? In cases where Serum Creatinine is not a good indicator, how can you use daily Ins and Outs to measure renal function? For example, Input was 3000mls and Output was 2500mls. Can an approximate creatinine clearance be derived from these values? Anyone have references? Thanks!

Inulin behaves the same way as creatinine does with respect to kidney function. Inulin must be injected though because it is not made by the body. So, if your input (injection) of inulin was 3000mls (hypothetical of course), and your output was 2500mls, then yes you could obtain a clearance rate very similar to what creatinine would give you. The substance is important. There will be a certain amount of secretion and/or reabsorbtion with most substances. Inulin and creatinine are unique in their actions.
