Bacterial Infections in a dog...possible reality of survival?Ok..we took my dog to the vet (not the one previously mentioned in an earlier question) as she was ill. At first they thought that she had kidney failure (diseased from birth) or possible Addison's disease..so they began treating her with medication. She came back fairly quickly and began eating and drinking again. Now they are fairly confused..and are beginning to think that she could have possibly gotten a bacterial infection which possibly damaged her kidneys therefore causing the kidney failure. What, if anything, could they do in order to save her life?
Yes Curtis, but what if it caused kidney damage?
They took blood..and told us thet her lvls of something were like 160 (not sure what lvls they were talking about I stopped listening at "Kidney Failure") which is why they at first thought she was born with bad kidneys.

Bacterial infections are in general easily taken care of...anti-biotics. Thank you bread mold! Funny that it was grown on orange peels though...
If she has kidney failue as a result of an infection hopefully you can sue their incompetent rear ends and close them down for not running a simple blood test to check for infection (not to mention infection and fever usually go hand in hand, did they not take a temperature!?!?!). Kill the infection, if there is one, worry about the kidney's when you cross that road. There are several medications used to improve kidney function and methods to "flush" them, perhaps after clearing out the infection the kidneys will be more sensitive to treatment aka there'll be a greater chance of the medicine giving the desired effect.

The bacterial infection is easy enough to resolve... The problem would be kidney damage/ failure... Yourpup may need dyalysis if the damage is bad enough.

Bacterial infections are typically easily treated with antibiotics. If your pet has kidney failure depending on where she's at with the disease they may put her on a prescription diet designed specifically for the kidneys, give injections of medication to help if she has an anemia, and also give fluid therapy via IV (only by a vet) or under the skin, which they can show you how to do at home. it's similar to dialysis in that the extra fluids will help your pet flush her system better and hopefully cause less stress and damage to her already poor kidneys.

Hi
The first thing I would likely do is get a second opinion to confirm the diagnosis. As far as treating kidney failure, here's a link to a couple articles that may be helpful to you.
