Are patients with chronic kidney disease, stage 4, suppose to drink alot of water? Can someone help me out a little here, my patient is stage 4 CKD but my instructor was telling me Not to give the patient more than 4 cups of water, why??? Isn't suppose to help dilute kidney stones? Also my patient has major electrolyte imbalances in sodium, potassium, and chloride? Does anyone know why, there not suppose to have water?

the kidneys are not able to process a lot of water at this stage, which could lead to a fluid overload and lead to congestive heart failure.

In end stage renal failure the body often retains fluid. When large amounts of fluid are retained, the fluid can restrict lung space and cause breathing dificulties. This is a distressing feeling not being able to take a decent breath and the body is very unsettled without adequate oxygen and complains.
