How to Dissolve Kidney Stones Effectively Using the Latest Technology

Article by Alvin Hopkinson

Recent technology aimed on how to dissolve kidney stones are already available in some hospitals. Thanks to various medical practitioners whose purpose is to ease the pain of the sufferers, giving rise to modern equipment on how to dissolve kidney stones effectively.

Kidney stones are crystallized calcium substances and uric acids that form in the body due to the inefficiency of the kidney to dissolve them naturally or caused by some genetic disorders.

Normally, a sufferer can experience excruciating pain starting from the lower back all the way to the groin. This is due to the stones that is already large enough to block the ureter.

Treating kidney stones have tremendously changed with the advent of recent technology and in-depth medical knowledge.Medical breakthrough gave rise to various equipment and techniques on how to dissolve kidney stones, as follows:

1. Lithotripsy - This is by far the most effective treatment of kidney stones found in the kidney or upper ureter. A instrument or probe will break the stones and can easily pass the urine. This is not applicable to some medical conditions and those with large stones. This requires more than one treatment.

This can be categorized as:

a. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) - Highly focused impulses are projected outside the body then breaks the kidney into pieces in order to pass via the urine. This treatment is not advisable to those with struvite stones or pregnant women.

b. Electrohydraulic lithotripsy (EHL) - A flexible probe is used in breaking small stones with electric shock wave. A utereroscope aids the probe in the positioning near the stone.

c. Ultrasonic lithotripsy - Kidney stones are dissolved with the use of high frequency sound waves connected to the electronic probe. The fragments can now be removed surgically or eliminated via the urine if they are small.

2. Ureteroscopy- A thin and long telescopic instrument (ureteroscope) is used to treat Kidney stones located in the ureter. A small basket is inserted in the ureteroscope to remove the stones, this is called basket extraction. Laser or similar device can also be used. Once this is performed, the patient can already leave the hospital on the same day.3. Percutaneous Nephrostolithotomy (PCN)- The kidney stones are removed surgically with the direct route through the kidney using a guide wire and a needle. Surgical instruments are then used through the cateters to pulverize and remove the stones. A stone-free outcome is achieved but the patient has to be hospitalized and can only go back to regular activity after 2 weeks.

We do not need all these modern equipment if we are only cautious in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Eating the right foods, adequately nourishing our body with water and coupled with exercise will avoid the formation of kidney stones.

In the end, the problem of how to dissolve kidney stones will be a thing of the past.
