5 Reasons Why You Should Eat Red Kidney Beans For a Healthy Living

Article by Byul Im

Kidney beans are great source of fiber where it helps you lower your cholesterol. Kidney beans have a high fiber source which can stop blood sugar levels from increasing after a meal. It's a great choice to eat for people who are diabetics. A family member of mine is diabetic so I usually mix the beans with grains such as white rice which is fat free but has excellent protein.

According to the wholefood website the kidney beans have an "excellent source of the trace mineral, molybdenum, an integral component of the enzyme sulfite oxidase, which is responsible for detoxifying sulfites. Just one cup of cooked kidney beans supplies 177.0% of the daily value for molybdenum. Sulfites are a type of preservative commonly added to prepared foods like delicatessen salads and salad bars. Persons who are sensitive to sulfites in these foods may experience rapid heartbeat, headache or disorientation if sulfites are unwittingly consumed. If you have ever reacted to sulfites, it may be because your molybdenum stores are insufficient to detoxify them."

So next time when you shopping at the supermarket, you may want to look at the ingredient section and point out if the item has sulfites. If it does, try to stay away from it. If you really want to eat it, pick up some kidney beans so that you can detoxify yourself.

Here are the 5 reasons why you should eat kidney beans.

1. The Iron and Protein

One cup of Kidney beans has 15 grams of protein and 5 mg of iron which is 30 of your daily intake requirement. I usually combine it with grains like white rice which can give protein with amino acids, low fat and no cholesterol.

2. The Fiber

Fiber is a great way to lower cholesterol which also helps push the cholesterol through the digestive track. Beans in general are digested very slowly so they are good food to keep you away from hunger. Cup of this stuff basically covers half of your required daily fiber intake.

3. The Antioxidants

Red beans are considered to have the highest antioxidant out of all foods. Antioxidants are a great way to protect your cells from being damaged which causes free radicals. You don't want free radicals in your body as it can increase the risk of getting sick or even cause cancer.

4. The Cost

The cost of beans is not as high as most foods. It's possibly one of the best things you can spend your money on knowing that It's great food for your body. My mother always told me that healthy is the most important thing over all other materialistic things.

5. The Flavor

Although I didn't like the taste of beans growing up, I've learned to love them as I get older. Especially knowing the fact that It's very good for the heart. Taking care of myself makes my body feel great and I love feeling healthy. Here is a simple baked bean recipe that surely is tasty for lunch or dinner. Try it out.

Easy to Make Baked Bean

INGREDIENTS

2 cups of beans 1/2 pound of bacon 1 onion (finely diced) 1/4 cup of brown sugar 3 tablespoons of molasses 1/4 teaspoon of dry mustard 1/2 cup of ketchup 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoons of sea salt 1/4 teaspoon of freshly ground pepper

DIRECTIONS

Start by soaking the beans overnight in water then simmer the beans in the same water until they are tender. You should cook them for about 1 hour then drain but save the liquid. Next you want to preheat the oven to 320 degree Fahrenheit. Arrange all the beans in a casserole dish and layering them with the beans on the bottom then bacon and onion.

In a separate pan you want to mix the molasses, dry mustard, ketchup, sea salt and fresh ground pepper, brown sugar with Worcestershire sauce. Bring it to a boil and pour the mixture over the beans. You want to make sure it's enough to cover the beans then cover the dish with aluminum foil. Leave it baking for 3 hours or until they are tender. If you need to add more liquid then do so. You don't want the beans from getting dry. Should easily come out as the perfect flavorful baked bean dish.
