What would cause a 25 year old woman to have kidney disease?

What would cause a 25 year old woman to have kidney disease? My co-worker's sister went into the hospital with severe dehydration and acute renal failure. After a week she is still in the hospital but downgraded from the ICU to a regular floor. She was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease. Her mother had kidney disease, but was much older when it became so severe she had to have a transplant.

From what I read on line, some types of kidney disease can be hereditary, but she's only 25.

She was on a medication that was making her sick to her stomach and was throwing up for almost a week, which caused the dehydration. Could that have triggered the kidney disease? or is it a blessing in disguise that she was so dehydrated that her kidneys shut down and they discovered the disease before it was too late?

Diabetes or polycystic kidney disease come to mind. Probably PCS if it's that far, that young. For it to be diabetic she'd have to hae had some severe bouts of DKA to mess her kidneys up that much.

However, PCS is usually -quite- painful to say the least. And I'd think she'd know if her mother had that.

genetics can predisposition a person to specific diseases but when or how bad the case becomes is impacted by several external factors. this includes diet, exercise, regular checkups etc.

It could be anything from medication (legal or illegal) that she may have taken, it could even be a disease like Hepatitis that she was not aware that she had..or it could be heredity.
