What pain medications can I use if I have kidney disease?I have IGA Nephropathy. I have had a worsened back problem which I am going to physical therapy for. From what my doctor told me, I am ONLY to take Acetametaphine based medications. My nephrologist has since left for another job. My family doc prescribed naproxin for back pain (which I can not have) she said she will not prescrible an alternative. She called the hospital where my old doctor once was, and they said by my last tests, it would be able to consume anti-inflamatories for a very short time. However, I am only 27, and I do not want to chance damaging my kidneys further. How do I find a doctor that feels the same way, and will prescribe something for pain so I can go back to work? HElp!!!

First, get another family doctor. This one sounds like she doesn't know her @ss from a hole in the ground. Second, follow the advice from your Nephrologist about the Acetaminaphine. My father has kidney disease and this is about the only OTC medicine that he can safely take. Stay away from anything that is classified as an ACE Inhibitor.

My father-in-law has kidney problems, which has left him with only 20% of function. I know that the age difference is big, he is 76. He also has a killer sciatic down both legs, but the pain from the sciatic was gonna give him a heart attack. His Doctor put him on Lortab and a very high dose, in which he told him this would not effect his kidney's at all, I know because I was there. I am a CNA so I helped take care of him. Now they have changed his med to a pain patch called fentnal, again a high dosage 50mg's. It's always a good idea to get a second opinion, most doctors don't want to give pain medication anymore because of the growing misuse of these drugs. I know that alot of people don't want to use heavy duty pain meds but sometimes that is the only thing that will give you any comfort. Maybe try and see a pain specialist they are very cautious not to give you something that will affect your kidney's. I wish you well.
