Questions about polycystic kidney disease......?

Questions about polycystic kidney disease......?I was diagnosed during an ultrasound while my mom was still pregnant.(usually its diagnosed in an adult) I'm now 16 and doing fine but I'd like to know... first is it life threatening? second is it unusual that i was diagnosed before I was born? and also does this affect the disease at all? thanks in advance...

It's life threatening if you don't do anything about it, imho...
It is not unusual, because they do ultrasounds on moms-to-be all the time.

Do you have ARPKD or ADPKD? ARPKD can often times be diagnosed by seeing abnormalities in the kidneys during an ultasound (which they diagnose as ARPKD prior to birth). ADPKD is the one that is usually not known about until adulthood and don't generally have problems until adulthood.

PKDcure.org is a good resource in finding out what you need to know. It has a Q&A that list the most common questions in the learning center and stories from persons dealing with either form of PKD. Also you can get a free information packet sent to you from PKDcure.org. If you have a nephrologist you can call them and ask questions or have your mom call and ask (since you are only 16 a parent may have to). And if you don't have a nephrologist you should probably get one.
