My cat has kidney disease and has to get urine taken at the vet - is it painful? He has to get a blood test to check how his kidneys are doing and the vet also has to extract urine from him with a needle - is this painful?

It isn't painful, but not the most effective. They should let the kitty go in a box in his own time, less evasive, and gets a better sample. It can take longer to get, some kitty's don't like to potty in public.

the painful thing is that you let this happen to a beloved pet. the better thing would let her go with dignity

Most cats don't like it, but having urine drawn with a needle isn't particularly painful, no more than a vaccination. Colecting urine this way provides the most useful samble because it isn't contaminated with any bacteria or fungi living further down the urinary tract.

This is actually not a painful procedure believe it or not. Most are more upset about having to hold still more than anything else. I have seen several cats that are really laid back not even flinch for the procedure. It only take about 3 seconds to get the sample. Also, this is the best way to get the urine if possible because it is a sterile sample. It is possible to get false readings from other samples because of bacteria that can be in the container.

of cause its painful, when you have an injection does it hurt.,the vet has to stick the needle in the cats bladder to extract the urine sample,so it will be painful..it will be less painful if when your cat go out for a wee you take a dish with you and follow the cat,so when its ready to have a wee put the dish under him to catch the wee..then pour it into a sterilized tablet bottle(if you have one ) and take it to the vets when you take the cat..poor thing..ouch
