Bad cat breath - what can I do?The past few months I've been staying with some.. let's call them extended family. Although they have a cat and a dog, they pay no mind to the cat and just kind of let him rot around the house all the time without giving him love. I'm a major animal lover, so since I've been here I've been showering him with affection and he's grown attached to me.
However, he has horrid breath. He can simply open his mouth to clean his paw and you'll be able to smell it given you're sitting near to him. He isn't that old, around 5 or 6. I know this is related to dental diseases and maybe kidney problems, and I told them about it, but they don't have the money to take him in to the vet nor would they be especially keen on doing it even if they did have the funds. I also don't have the money to be taking him in, so... Is there anything I can do to keep his mouth healthy?

You can try brushing his teeth at home, but it sounds like it is past the point of brushing and he is in need of a good cleaning, if his teeth are the problem. If you do brush at home, make sure to get pet toothpaste. Human toothpaste is toxic because of the bicarb in it.

It's sad that they won't get him checked out, cause that sounds like bad gingivitus or worse. You could pick up a cat tooth brush and paste from the pet store and brush his teeth a couple times a week. He won't like and you may need someone to help hold him down. Though eventually he'll get used to it if it's done regularly. There's also breath spray that will help with bad breath and germs that you can just spray on his gums and teeth. A tooth brush and paste will usually come in one package.
Try looking on amazon, their prices are always lower than a pet store.

My Vet was inspecting my 3 yr old Seal Point Siamese and noticed how clean his teeth were. He asked me if I brushed them, I said no. He said, "You don't feed him the mushy stuff, I can tell. What does he eat?" I told him I started him on Purina Indoor kitten dried food, then changed to Indoor formula for adults. The Vet said well it's doing a good job on his teeth and the rest of him. When I got home, I looked at the bag, which I keep double sealed in big plastic containers, and read that it helped keep their teeth clean, dissolves hair balls plus ingredients to keep intestines and bladder healthy. He weighs 14.5 lbs, and it's all muscle. He won't eat anything else. (except for a Purina treat I give him 3 times a day). The Vet said in about a year, I'll do a minor tarter clean, but he has such a small amount, it won't take long.
