If you take creatine supplements can it mimic signs of kidney failure on a blood test?My fiance is into body building and he takes creatine (nothing else though). Well, he had a routine doc apt the other day and they drew blood. Today we received a voicemail from the doc stating that he has unusual blood work and she was concerned he might have kidney failure. I'm worried. He doesn't have any blood in his urine or any of the symptoms, so what do you think? We are going in tomorrow to have more blood drawn to be sure.
Is it possible that the supplements could be skewing the results?

The short answer is, yes.
When doctors order blood tests, they usually order something called serum creatinine, which is a quick indicator of renal function. The creatine in the supplements is metabolized to creatinine, just like the creatine that everyone's body makes naturally, and raises blood levels for as long as it's being taken. If the doctor doesn't know that the patient is taking extra creatine, she will automatically assume that the higher creatinine level means that something is wrong with the kidneys.
Have your fiance lay off the creatine for 1-2 weeks, then have the blood work redone. Chances are it will be back in normal range (0.9-1.2).
BTW: a high level of muscle mass in relationship to body weight will also raise serum creatinine. High protein intake may also raise other blood tests and add to the misleading picture.
