You should start applying now for social security disability. They never allow disability right off anymore. Many people who really need the funding are forced to get attorneys who take a potion
Get the application and do it yourself. Get your doctor to help verify your condition. Keep a copy of all records you send in with a copy of the completed application. Make filling out this sort of paperwork a kind of hobby or annual past time so that when the time comes, you can get what you need.
I have met a lot of people who get disability who still are pretty darn able bodied. It makes me very angry since I have had a cousin with MS, my mom had horrific rheumatoid arthritis, and they had a heck of a time getting their funding at first.

I would have to say that if it does not affect your day to day life, you probably wont get disability for it. In regards to the job you were turned down for, you would need to prove that that was the reason you were not selected, not that someone else had better qualifications. If it was then you could file a suit against that employer.
About SSDI though, it is a program for the truly DISABLED. they have a stingent list of criteria and classifications that determine if someone is a certain PERCENT disabled.
By all means go out and file, then they will have a record at least that your condition has been here all along, but unless you are unable to perform daily care for yourself, and reasonable limitations on things like walking, etc, It will be very difficult to get SSDI.
Another note, a person receives SSDI based on their past earnings and employment history. Basically its a program that you pay into over the years of working in case you need it someday.
For those who do not have that work history, or for the poverty level/indigent there is SSI which is similar to welfare with restrictions on income, property and holdings.

People with kidney disease can qualify for Medicare, regardless of age.
You might also qualify for Medicaid.
Having either/both of those will take care of the bulk of your medical/drug bills.
You do not have to disclose your medical status during job interviews, and a prospective employer can't ask you about your health.
