Can there be no medical reason for blood in the urine (hematuria)?

Can there be no medical reason for blood in the urine (hematuria)? For approximately seven years I've had continuous 'traces' of blood in the urine, however, it has now escalated (in the past several months) to 'large amounts' of blood in the urine. I have a history of thyroid cancer (diagnosed in 95 at the age of 19) with the last recurrence and treatment in May of 2000. I've had numerous health problems including several benign tumors throughout my body. Had a workup 3 yrs ago with a Urologist - bladder looked good - I didn't want any further testing. Now going back to Urologist and he has ordered a CT Scan and Cytoscopy (SP??) to check for stones, cancer, etc. Said if negative would refer me to a Nephrologist for evaluation of kidney disease. Noticed lately I'm feeling bad - weak, dizzy, hands trembling, chest pain, abdominal pain, back pain, very odd severe shooting pains that feel deep in the trunk area. Can be a shooting pain from around the center of my back to rectum or in the front abdominal area to pelvic area. Very painful - feel faint upon

Keep going to the tests, what a bummer. Good luck to you. No there is no reason for blood in urine that's just "the way it is".

One of the key symptoms of renal cancer is actually painless hematuria (blood in the urine). If you are not having the symptoms of a urinary tract infection, it is possible that you have metastases of your cancer to your kidneys and surrounding areas - which would account for the pain. It's good that you're being evaluated, so you can seek treatment if it's positive. Other than that, there is always a medical explanation, even if your doctors don't know what it is.

Yes. Often there are traces for no apparent reason. However, since there is now a large amount it is good that you are getting a thorough work up. Maybe you have a kidney stone. I wish you good health & a quick recovery.

My husband had those symptoms and it was not until they did a lot of testing that they found out he had abnormal growths in his kidneys. They said it was genetic and he has to keep going back to the urologist every 6 months for a check up to make sure his ureters do not get blocked.
