ABSOLUTELY!

Doesn't matter if you have no family or past history of kidney disease. Diabetes alone will RUIN your kidneys, and it is absolutely necessary to try to protect them for as long as possible. When they fail (and it is a high probability that they will fail) your are looking at months or years of painful, sickening dialysis until a transplant is available -- IF the doctor can perform a transplant in your situation.

[Ask your doctor what your Creatinine Reading is, AND what your GFR (Glomular Filtration Rate) reading is. try to keep these number normal.]

ALSO -- due to the kidney damage, your blood pressure WILL be high -- and that leads to strokes, blindness, and heart attacks.

It is VERY necessary that you take a blood pressure medication that ALSO protects kidneys, like Cozaar (there are others).

DO NOT question your doctor's advice! Follow his order EXACTLY according to diet, exercise, weight loss, and other medication.
