I'm going to try not to be too detailed in this answer, because I don't feel like typing all the aspects of kidney function out. Changes in blood pressure are often caused by changes in the water content of your blood. The kidneys rely on osmosis and diffusion to function. Consequently, if your blood pressure is too high or low, it could cause problems.

Blood pressure determines renal artery blood flow. Without adequate blood flow to the kidneys, they do not receive adequate perfusion.

The kidneys work by filtration - Blood pressure in the blood vessels entering the kidneys drives about 10% of the blood volume through a filtration membrane at the start of each renal tubule, or nephron (there are about a million of these in each kidney). Larger things like blood cells and plasma proteins are too big to filter through, but the plasma and most of the smaller solutes are filtered into the nephrons; the function of the kidneys is then to REABSORB what the body needs to keep, and that's where solute pumps and osmotic pressures come into play, along with hormonal control mechanisms for the reabsorption processes. So why is BP necessary for proper kidney function - because it drives filtration in the kidneys. Without enough BP no filtration, no filtration and the solute pumps etc have nothing to do and they start to break down. If you lose all fitration pressure in the jkidneys you have just 8 hours to get the BP up and the kidneys filtering again or you can write your kidneys off!
