Mine also had gone untreated for a long time. A doctor or hospital is the best place to go. Lab tests are the only way. I had no problems fortunately. My doctor said that because I drank a lot of water, that may have helped keep things flushed out.

Diabetic nephropathy is kidney disease or damage that results as a complication of diabetes.
Kidney function tests are common lab tests used to evaluate how well the kidneys are working.
* BUN stands for blood urea nitrogen. Urea nitrogen is what forms when protein breaks down. A test can be done to measure the amount of urea nitrogen in the blood.
* Creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine, which is an important part of muscle. The laboratory test is used to measure the amount of creatinine in the blood.
* The creatinine clearance test compares the level of creatinine in urine with the creatinine level in the blood. (Creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine, which is an important part of muscle.) The test helps provide information on kidney function.
* Creatinine is a breakdown product of creatine, which is an important part of muscle. Creatinine is removed from the body entirely by the kidneys. Creatinine can also be measured with a urine test.

blood tests and urinalysis! and physical exam! Doctor can feel kidney and if not proper size they will order more testing than the blood draw and urinalysis.

Complete Blood Count and urine sample are what are needed, but Doctor must order them.

Standard, routine bloodwork that your doctor would request for a regular checkup can tell kidney function. BUN, Creatinine and GFR are included in routine lab workups and all tell how well your kidneys are working.
