Water/fluids are first - enough every day to keep the precipitates of our diet from forming stones. A recent posting on Yahoo News said 91 oz per day for women where 80% of that came from water, the balance from juices, water in foods, and other liquids (tea/coffee). 128 oz for men. That would be *minimal* intake. I am sure it is more for those who are participating in athletic / physical activities.
To improve the function? I would suggest you find an excellent naturopath so you can hear their advice on this highly critical body part.
There are herbs which cleanse the kidneys in various ways. Best to use them under the direction of a trained herbalist or naturopath.

Hi KitKat, a kidney is a reddish brown, bean-shaped organ that filters waste minerals and toxins from the blood. The kidneys regulate acid concentration and the kidneys maintain the water balance in the human body by producing urine.
Kidneys also make hormones that help keep bones strong blood healthy.
Kidneys that aren't functioning properly allow harmful toxins to build up. This may causes blood pressure to rise, the body will accumulate fluids, and may not produce enough red blood cells.
If you suspect that you're at risk for kidney stones, a life style change in diet works the best as a preventative measure. The simplest life style change you can make is drinking more liquids, pure water is best. Drink at least two quarts of water every twenty four hours. If you have a family history of kidney stones, your family doctor can perform blood tests to see if you are at risk and help you determine what factors to change in your diet to reduce your risk. Stop into your local health food store or shop online for supplements like magnesium and kidney cleanses.
Kidney stones risk can also be reduced by consuming juniper berries or adding lemon juice to your water. Lemon juice helps prevent crystallization in the kidneys. Teas such as thyme tea and knotgrass tea are good for dissolving mineral build-up in the kidneys as well.
