Will anything help a dog with kidney disease gain or maintain weight? My senior dog, Luigi, (exact age unknown as he is a rescue) has kidney disease and has lost a nearly 1/3 of his body weight. He is otherwise well, happy, and eating well (special kidney diet food) but has gone from 37 to just over 27 lbs. The vet just smiles but doesn't seem to have any helpful suggestions. He is on Azodyl for kidney support.

I can't be of much help to you, but I would recommend a HIGH carb, LOW protein diet.
I'm sorry, that's all I can offer to you! I hope you figure something out with works for you and your dog

I agree with the previous answer--
high carb
low protein
almost zero fat
It is very difficult on the kidneys to digest fat and protein. You might also add some extra IV fluids to help him with the kidney failure. Your vet could let you do that at home simply by injecting fluid subQ.

I recently lost a cat to kidney disease. Once the kidneys start losing their functionality, your baby will never go back to "normal." From my experience, they always lose weight.

Bless your heart and Luigi's as well. I had a dog of 11 years, Audrey, that went into the light in 2002 from Kidney disease. However, we managed it for several years with diet! They didn't have medications then, I'm happy to hear about the new developments.
I have one suggestion, try some maloxx. Audrey might eat well, but then vomit later. I'm sure you would notice this, but it's possible you have another animal taking care of it or later he might consume it, as they do, but some of the nutritional value is depleted. I found that a stomach anti-acid type medication, and that was the one my vet recommended, helped her digestion tremendously. I just poured some on her food and when she figured that out weeks later and avoided it, I gave her pill form in a hidden treat about 10 minutes before mealtime.
Have you noticed he salivates a lot? That is when I noticed issues with wt loss and diet. It seems like they also switched her from the K/D diet at one point to the U/D diet (or was it vice/versa - you would know i'm sure the progression of the prescription diets). I think that helped as well.
I hope this helps! Best of luck! My prayers are with you all.
Take care, Julie Ann
