Kidney Disease: Renal failure?

Renal failure?I have a friend who has been diagnosed with renal failure. We are going on a long rafting trip in the desert complete with heat, hikes, and general wilderness. I want to know what sorts of things to look out for, what he could do and not do, and such. He is young and is in overall good health except for this. He also just started blood pressure medication. Thank you.
He is at stage five but the only way he found out was because of a physical.
He is not on dialysis.

One of the main considerations is if he is one dialysis or not. If he is:
1. He will need to find an alternate facility to dialyze.
2. He will probably not have enough energy for all of the planned activities.
3. He is probably on fluid restrictions, and this will be difficult if it's too hot.

If he does not have end stage renal failure (there are several stages and you didn't specify which stage he has) and need dialysis, then he should talk to his doctor beforehand. He probably has a specific diet he follows.

Kidney disease like that is not typically present in you, otherwise healthy people. Did he have an "episode" of kidney failure secondary to a drug overdose or similar event?
On'e blood pressure is intimately connected to the kidneys. High blood pressure untreated for a long time can damage the kidneys, maybe this is what happened.

In any case, if he has mild renal failure he'll probably be ok. I would be more concerned that he feels okay on the new blood pressure medication- preferably for a few weeks- before any long desert rafting trips!

He may be restricting his fluid intake to help lower his BP and to make his kidneys work less. Watch out ofr dehydration.

wow i hope he does ok ....and gets a transplant .......i have kidney disease(mpgn type2)--best thing is to not over work himself he needs to drink a lot of water and keep hydrated --i dont believe there is anything wrong with going hiking but i am not a doctor nor have i been in renal failure---he needs to be careful and i would make sure he talks with his neuphrologist(kidney dr)and they would be able to tell you more ....
