is catnip safe for cats with kidney problems?is catnip safe for cats with kidney problems?
my 12 year old cat has been on a special prescription diet for renal problems for a couple of years (hill's k/d). Thankfully he has no symptoms and seems healthy in spite of his compromised kidneys. Anyway.. like most cats, he loves catnip. Does anyone know if cats with kidney disease have problems processing catnip/ excreting it? Is it ok to keep giving it to him? thanks!

As far as I know cats don't eat catnip, they just like the aroma so you probably don't need to worry.

Um, cats aren't supposed to eat catnip, as far as I know. Give him a catnip toy, and he can play with it. :)

I think even a healthy kitty can have vomiting or diarrhea if they eat A LOT of it, apart from that I have never heard of catnip hurting kitties with any health problems. I've never seen any react badly, the ones who do eat it usually just eat a little. My parents have a 14 year old with renal problems too and I know he loves the stuff. I think it's just protein you need to worry about, some pinches of catnip at play time shouldn't hurt anything.
You might want to talk to your vet, just to be on the safe side.
