Abnormally high protein level in urine cause for concern?

Abnormally high protein level in urine cause for concern?Today I went for a physical for my new job and the nurse informed me that I had an abnormally high amount of protein in my urine sample and that she was required to tell me, but that it could just be something I ate. I didnt really eat much today though so I was just like 'okay'. Other than that I passed with flying colors. I didn't think much of it until out of curiousity I read that it could be a sign of kidney disease and other problems so now Im a little concerned....so my question is, are high protein levels in urine as uncommon as they sound and can other factors besides having a kidney problem cause higher protein levels in these tests? like stress? or being skinny? Because I am j a teen and Im pretty healthy and never had this result on a test before so...should i be worried?

Kidneys normally don't let protein molecules pass through into the urine, therefore it is abnormal to find protein in your urine. It is not uncommon to see small levels of protein if you have a urinary tract infection. There are many other reasons to have protein in your urine, most of which are very minor. I encourage you to see your primary care provider for a repeat UA. If still positive for protein, they can look at your urine under the microscope to see if you have an infection, or order blood tests to check for kidney function. Hopefully, it will be negative for protein, and you can just chalk this test up to a fluke. A one-time positive for protein is not reason for concern.
