Kidney Disease: What would be the chances (if known) of me inheriting this disease?

What would be the chances (if known) of me inheriting this disease? My father and grandfather both passed away from genetic kidney cancer. What are the chances that this disease was passed to me? My mother's side of the family does not have the disease. Its something I have started to seriously think about, also, how could i go about finding this out... and what can be done about it??

There is a very good chance and my reccomendation is start going to the doctor's to get it checked out at a young age because if they can catch it early you will have a much better chance on surviving it

I don't know what the chances are that among the genes you got from your father this one was included. The only way to know is to be tested. If you don't have the gene your chances of getting kidney cancer is the same as the rest of us.

If you do have the gene the chances of you getting kidney cancer will depend on the type. VHL has a 35-45% chance, the majority of BHD patients do not get kidney cancer and I am not sure about type 2 papillary. If you do have it you should see a urologist to discuss what it means to you, discuss periodic screening and any possible preventative measures.

Awhile back the National Cancer Institute was looking for families with hereditary kidney cancer for one of its programs. I don't know if they are still looking, but I included a link to their website.
