Kidney Disease: Can anyone give the symptoms of renal failure or what is causing death in tainted pet food?

Can anyone give the symptoms of renal failure or what is causing death in tainted pet food?I want to dedicate the answers on this to a Chihuahua named Chico, & other companions that have passed as a result of the tainted pet food. Could anyone please give us a list of symptoms for renal failure, or whatever it is that is endangering our precious friends. We mourn for ones whom have suffered, and I hope we can all help protect the lives of other animals by learning what symptoms to be watchful of. Thank you all!

The first signs of kidney damage are excessive thirst/urination. Next, the signs vary from vomiting, diarrhea, depression/lethargy, very bad breath, etc. It's so sad, about the whole food thing.. my dog also ate the nutro pouches and has excessive thirst, so I know all about it. A trip to the vet is definitely in order. Good luck everyone!

I got this from a medical website for people, but I assume that the symptoms would be the same for animals.

Renal failure typically causes nausea and vomiting, along with other symptoms that depend on the stage.

Paying attention to the symptoms of acute renal failure is crucial. The condition can be fatal if it is not diagnosed and treated within days. Symptoms may include:
· Greatly reduced urine output;
· Drowsiness and headache; and
· Back pain.

Chronic renal failure, which develops slowly, can have vague and sporadic symptoms. Typically, the syndrome begins with a feeling of weakness and a loss of appetite, followed by:
· Frequent urination, especially at night;
· Pale, itchy, and easily bruised skin;
· Shortness of breath;
· Persistent hiccups;
· Muscular twitching;
· A sensation of pins and needles in the hands, feet; or other areas and
· Leg cramps.

End-stage renal disease, a severe illness, produces noticeable symptoms, such as:
· Greatly reduced volume of urine;
· Swelling of the face, limbs, and abdomen;
· Severe lethargy;
· Headache;
· Furry tongue;
· Very itchy skin; and
· Breath that smells like ammonia.

If anyone can add to this, please do, or correct me if I'm wrong.

Increasing in drinking ( thirst) and fequent urination, loss of appetite. Can cause vomiting. Sometimes wobbling and twitching.

The most common symptoms generally are:

Loss of appetite
Vomiting
Lethargy

Vets are saying that excessive thirst can be a symptom as well as drinking no water at all.

Personally, I feel that all pets, at this time, should be taken off of canned food (and food in pouches) regardless of brand, just to be safe.
My dogs, I have five of them, have been fed dry Nutro for several years now, but since the canned Nutro has been recalled I am switching to Pedigree(dry food.)
At the cost of $ 22-32.00 a bag that is not a cheap food by any means but obviously it doesn't seem to make a whole heck of alot of difference to these manufacturers, whether the food is expensive or inexpensive.
Shame, shame on these pet food companies who are involved. This is a terrible, terrible thing to happen, not only in regards to all the pets who have died but those who are suffering right now as well. There is no excuse for this!

menufoods.com had mentioned that they had contracted a new vendor, or something of that nature, and had an additional ingredient added to those foods on the recall list. We still haven't heard what that ingredient is or what is killing them. They only reported that "wheat gluten" is suspect.
You know, days have gone by, there is no reason why they haven't come up with a definate cause (toxin) in the food.
That is unacceptable and I am angry!!

The media is still reporting that 10 deaths have occurred. What a joke! As soon as I heard about the recall I posted it on Yahoo and within one day the people who responded to my alert had lost a total of 9 pets. This doesn't take into consideration all those dogs/cats who have died across the nation and in Canada as well.

JodieNat - Some of the tainted food goes back to cans/pouches dated in December '06.

I have only just lost mine to renal failure in January. They lose all energy, go right off food. Drink quite a lot. Their fur goes manky and they can start to smell a bit bad too. RIP Spooky.
